Going to a test n tune session at a local drag strip is one of the cheapest, safest, and legal ways to see how fast your car is and I suggest everyone that wants to go fast, to check out one of these events at least once. There are a few things everyone should know before going though. Most importantly, while you're "racing" typically you aren't really racing, these events are VERY casual. You may be lining up against another car, but most people are only concentrating on what their car is running, not what the car they're up against is running, this is called "Test n Tune" for a reason. So relax Stinger brother or sister, it's just you, your car, the tree, and the asphalt in front of you unless you call someone out. You're probably going to see everything from old pick up trucks running 20 second 1/4 miles to blistering fast LS powered monstrosities and crazy turbo b16 civics running 9s or better.

Most people know this but just to emphasize, your time will be relative to the conditions at your track. Higher temps, higher humidity, and higher altitude will all make your car slower. If it's hot or if you're racing in somewhere like Denver, your times will be a lot slower than what you may be hoping for.

If you're on street tires, you absolutely can not do what you see the slick cars doing. What I mean by this is, you do NOT drive through the water box, drive around it. If you drive through it on street tires you're going to trap water in the treads of your tires, then that water will come out of your tires all along the track as you run. That's going to reduce your traction, that's going to reduce the traction of the people that run after you in your lane, don't do it. You'll see slick cars doing big ole smokey burn outs, the reason they do this is to get some heat in their tires which helps make them more sticky. This does not help a street tire. Do a burnout if you want but just be aware it's just for fun, if you do make sure someone takes a video, post it on here, and tell us how you did it :) The most you want to do is, after you go around the water box, back up into the damp area in front of it and spin your tires real quick, that'll get a lot of the junk off them. You'll also see slick cars with tires that look almost flat so you might think this is something you should do, it isn't. If you lower the pressure too low on a street tire, the middle of the tire will actually stop making contact with the road and you'll get less traction. If you want to lower pressure, you can certainly try but I wouldn't go lower than 25 psi.

Lastly, expect people to approach you and talk to you about your car, especially if you're running in the 12s or better. Go out, have fun, check out some cool cars, talk to some gear heads, and go fast a couple times.

Awesome post! Still haven't been to a drag strip yet but been planning to before the summer hits. Thanks for all the info!

I run at an NHRA track and am approaching 11.49. Should i buy that fire jacket now or is there any chance they will let me slide? Not looking forward to a hot jacket in a hot car with the windows rolled up and the AC off! ;)

I would wait until you actually hit the time. If you do in fact hit 11.49 they will pull you aside and tell you not to run that fast again without a fire jacket; they won't instantly ban you.

They banned me immediately when i ran 12, i wasn't aware of the helmet rule at 12, thought it was at 11. Just wondered if they always enforce the rules this rigorously.
I'll check if they sell jackets there and then i am covered.

But as you know weight means sooo much in a stinger more than most cars. So much that the 3 lbs of weight you might not be able to crack 11.4

They never do where I used to run, but it's out in the country in Alabama...

If they really stick to the rules, it isn't just the fire jacket, you'll need a roll bar, harness, and drive shaft loop as well once you hit 11.499

They are pretty strict at Atco. Luckily, they rent helmets but not ones rated high enough for the quicker times. They told me at the end of last season that it was time to invest in my own helmet if I planned on hitting better times. And this season, they remembered me as I rolled in and asked if I finally got a safer helmet. Lol

I think at our track if you are just doing test n tune they are more leanient as I've seen mclaren, hellcats, rs3 etc running under 11.49 with no roll or harness.
Thinly vailed bit was asking for more info on the fake 10.9 time with a 2500 DA to see if they would have enforced jacket at 10 rather than low 11s as the story goes. Don't mean to derail this thread and i was curious as well. Won't be running 11.49 with out another mod and i think I'm done with mods.

I bet if you get a TCU tune, whenever that comes out, you'll be able to easily crush 11.49.

I can't imagine installing a roll cage in a brand new Audi RS#, much less a McLaren, hellcat sure, it's a drag streetcar as it is, it probably needs it even for the street.

I don't know why you are calling the 10.9 time fake... it has his name on the timeslip and it's clearly a 10.9. The only debate should be which (if any) mods he is not disclosing

Maybe with TCU tune and another ecu tune breakthrough i could get 11.49.
I suspect my 11.58 dragy goes to 11.78 with higher temps, no slope and heat soak. I did run an 11.6 dragy uphill but still at 29 degrees and an ice cold fmic and intake.

If you could cut a 1.6 60' with a TCU tune, that should take off .3-.4 from your ET.

The only time you will need a cage is at 11.49 or faster. Shaft loops at 13.99 or faster if you run any type of slicks/11.49 if your on street tires... Run faster than 13.99 you need a brain bucket and it must have a snell 2015 sticker no cheapo helmets.. 3.2A/1 jacket if your over 11.49..If you guys are going to compete for points get an advanced ET license and a Perm Car number. Have fun and enjoy but be safe.

OK, I gotta know if that's some kind of weird local euphemism for something??? :sneaky:

The 1/4 thread has been locked because it was long over due given the lack of class by too many “contributors.” So, we need another one.
If we make a new one, it should be required that no discussion other than what would be directed toward drag runs and mods should be allowed. Drag strips have rules; thus, a thread about our performance at drag strips should have rules.

Maybe just a place that all you can do is post times and slips. You can have a discussion elsewhere

Sacramento Raceway makes you wear a helmet any faster than a 14.0

I finally bought myself a brand new one. #worthit

I think we need some discussion in the 1/4 thread related to mods and going fast like kata says. Just slips would be boring.
We need a thread called "The wood shed" only for trollers and smack talk. That would clean up legit discussions. When people go off topic tell them to take it behind the wood shed.
