JB4 Install Problems

I installed my new JB4 today and found that it makes the car idle very rough causing the whole thing to shake. After it starts shaking it throws a CEL and there's lots of fuel rich white smoke. Any thoughts? This only happens while the JB4 is connected, once it is disconnected the problems stop.

Sounds like you're doing something wrong, but no psychic powers here. Install photos would be a good start. Maybe a JB4 log at idle, and use the JB4 app to read the fault codes, etc.

Hi Terry! Thanks for the quick reply! I'm unable to get the Bluetooth module to connect right now it sits there attempting a JB4 handshake for a little while before disconnecting. My phone sees the Bluetooth device in the Bluetooth settings so it's at least getting power. In the meantime, here are the install photos. I took some of the inside of the jb4 as well 20190216_095417.webp 20190216_095318.webp 20190216_094057.webp 20190216_094047.webp 20190216_095313.webp 20190216_094918.webp 20190216_094649.webp 20190216_094344.webp

Looks OK at first glance. I'd disconnect the fuel wires from the posi-taps for the moment while you sort out what might be wrong.

Unplug the JB4 connector from the control board and send a photo of the gold pins.

Looks like the OBD connector might be on backwards. Unless some of the cables are orientated differently. On the one I received the wires are facing up towards the driver seat.

Thanks for the suggestion, I double checked and it only plugs in the one way. I'm not sure that that is the problem.

What about if OBDII is removed from the equation?

I'll be out but if you need further help just email us, normally faster than posting here and waiting for one of us to see it. :)

support@burgertuning.com. Worst case we can swap the unit for another one to speed up diagnostics.

Did you update the firmware? Mine did this when the firmware update failed and I tried to start the car before I successfully updated it.

Nope, didn't update the firmware. I was going to try that to see if it fixed things but I couldn't get the app to connect and I'm not sure if there's another way to do so

A bit of an update, I got some misfires this morning with the denso plugs so I swapped the stock plugs in gapped to .026 and things cleared up on that front. I plugged the JB4 in without the ODBII and there was an improvement. There was no check engine light now but there was some smoke that smelled strongly of gas and the engine was running rough and idling around 600 or so RPM. I can definitely shoot an email off to support

How's the car running today with the JB4 disconnected?

Sounds like a plug or coil issue? Did you take out a coil? What codes were you getting before, exactly? Read with an OBDII reader if you can't read with the JB4.

Ever since I put the re-gapped stock spark plugs in instead of the densos, it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the car is running better than it ever has. I'm even getting better fuel economy now.:)

I'm inclined to agree that it was a plug issue. The only times I removed the coils was when I was swapping the plugs. As for the codes I'm not getting them now and I'm not too sure I want to put the densos back in since they were causing the car to misfire. I think when I get another chance, I'll try plugging the JB4 in with the OBDII and see if throws a code this time. There are no concerns around using it with the re-gapped stock plugs, right?
