Hi

Proud owner of a new Chroma Red Stinger GT so thought I would join the forum for information.

Originally from UK but long term resident in Busan Korea.

Car history in Korea goes somethin like this:

1. Hyundai Tuscani (sold)
2. Daewoo Winstorm (have)
3. Genesis G330 (sold)
4. SM3 (sold)
5. Ssang Yong Korando C (have)
6. KIA Stinger GT (just got!!)

Welcome! What is a Genesis G330?

A Genesis G330 is basically the 2015 version of the G80 with the 3.3V6 engine - I think the official model designation is DH330. Here in Korea it was badged as G330.

If I ever get past the security bar to posting pictures I'll post some pictures!

Hi and Welcome, could you tell me what those blue square cubes are on the doors? Are they some sort of protective buffer? Looks like you decided to take them off in later photos.

Hi @Ozstung , those blue cubes were on every Stinger placed at the factory to protect from hitting the door paintwork when opening, i saw my Stinger with these blue cubes still on in the holding yard , and asked to keep them, including the paperwork hanging inside the windows , placed at the factory, i kept it all...

In Korea all new cars come with these little sponge like things which are part of the shipment wrapping to protect the doors. You see lots of people leave them on but I took them straight off first chance I got...

Other info - I read people talking about GT1 and GT2? Here in Korea there is only just the "GT" which comes pretty much fully loaded - the only extra option I have is the sunroof which strangely is not standard here - as far as I can tell pretty much every other option is standard on the Korean version of the GT

Yes in Australia there is only one model called Gt and that's the top of the line spec. I was reading Yesterday its up to 92% of all Stingers purchased are the GT model.

Sorry for the late reply – I have been up in Seoul all week on business and I only just saw your post…


I think you are partly correct… the Sedan format pretty much covers 90% of all cars, big and small here in Korea… the only exceptions would be the SUV format…


I am struggling to think of another Korean model that has a hatchback….


As for what I would call an “Estate” … I believe in US this is referred to as a “station waggon” … I see one about every six months... very unusual…


However, I think it is also partly to do with the intrinsic conformism in Korea…. for your average Korean dude, it takes a bit balls to drive a G70 here…. and a bit more balls to drive a bright blue one…. It takes even more balls to drive a black Stinger GT…. to drive a screaming bright red, one is off the scale….


I could go on all night about very deep societal issues in Korea… but life is too short…

@Peterjung From my perspective (entirely US indoctrinated history, starting with the Korean War, continuing with modern Medía portrayal), Korean culture, the entire shooting match, North to South, is a study in entrenched "groupthink". The "ballsy" attitude you mention being rare are just the few mavericks inevitable in a human population. But generations of groupthink being rewarded and maverick behavior being punished, on all levels from family to neighborhood to school and workplace and finally the anathema of published Medía, keeps the great majority of people towing the acceptable (politically correct) line in all things. There is little individual initiative, and much of the Hive Insect Mentality. This groupthink mentality has to be far more pronounced in a climate of danger and fear, i.e. NK. But it still works even in societies like the cosmopolitan makeup of the US. Within cultural enclaves of mainly foreign immigrants, but also religiously inbred traditional areas, groupthink abounds as a feature of collective human nature. It's just that here there is escape from it, never very far away. In a place as locked by geography and homogenous culture as SK, there is literally no escape from the groupthink that governs daily intercourse. And the fear of being noticed negatively and having to suffer the consequences works its influence to make the vast majority of people constantly on the lookout for pariahs mocking societal mores; and reversely, guarding oneself against stepping out in any way that will get oneself noticed: there lies danger.

I hear ya.

That goes w/ my remark about being conservative; the reason why the LF Sonata was so conservatively designed (pre-refresh) was b/c the Korean market wasn't so enamored w/ the more expressive design of the YF Sonata (which backfired for the US market).

But think that's changing (slowly).

Japanese imports are becoming more popular (esp Toyota/Lexus) in part b/c more (younger) buyers don't want to be seen driving what everyone else has, and the i30N and Veloster-N have sold pretty well, esp. in the hard to miss Celadon blue.

But yeah, still largely a conformist/conservative society.
