Pulling Driver's Side Turbo

Just so anyone who wonders can be sure: most of the places I've contacted can't rebuild the turbos because they'd have to source parts by buying a brand new one.

So it looks like I'll have to swap this one out myself with a new one or find a junkyard one. :|

New turbos are pretty cheap for this platform. I've seen them for 800ish a few places. Probably the best way to go.

All the brand new ones are $1200. I found a junkyard one for $995. Lame, cuz that's actually NOT that cheap for such a tinyass turbo, lol

That's pretty good coming from MB world. New turbo cores were 8k a price!

So I can officially confirm that this is, indeed, possible as I have now performed a swap on my own. I'm probably the first, if not only, non-shop Stinger owner that's done it, and there are a lot of tips and tricks. While none of the shops I contacted about this that have done swaps gave me a lick of advice or hints, I do want to credit Nick in this thread for providing pics.

Here's the old turbo removed:

And the "new" junkyard turbo installed:

It's up and running so far without police siren sounds. Only time will tell if the dealership FUBAR'd the break-in on the "old" turbo.

Additionally, I may post the old turbo up for sale as a rebuild/core unit for cheap. It may make siren sounds, so it could be a warped compressor shaft (or maybe the bearings), but everything else on it is pristine as it only has 1000 miles on it.

Since there are so many things to know about the turbo removal, instead of writing a novel I'll simply say that if anyone has any questions about removing the driver's side turbo, don't hesitate to ask me.

:D

How long did it take you? How does the passenger side look in comparison?

Considering how much was adapting and figuring out how (not so much can or can't), I can't accurately say. It did take me 3 days, though, lol

I had to make my own special ultra-low profile allen ratcheting wrench as a taste of what I went through, hahaha

EDIT: Forgot you asked about the passenger side, though I think it slipped my mind to answer because I haven't really looked at it nor could it be that different. The biggest hurdle will always be that corrugated pipe that I later surmised was the oil outlet from the turbo (and felt a little ashamed I didn't recognize it sooner).

I’m too lazy to read this whole thread... why did you have to replace the turbo yourself out of warranty?

Sorry
I didnt see/get notifications you had some questions but glad you got it out
The passenger side is much much easier for those asking

I don't see how it's really any different. Are you sure it's not because we all started with the driver's side and went into the passenger side knowing exactly what to do? :p

I do know the passenger side wastegate lever arm is positioned differently, though, giving more clearance to the oil outlet bolts, lol

The AC Compressor is super in the way of the driver side

That's true, but it's not like it's clear sight lines on the passenger side, either  Now that I know where things are on the driver's side, the AC compressor poses little threat, though, hahaha

@NICK_KHAR I sent you a message about the passenger side turbo. Hope you see it, thanks!

Where did you find the junk yard turbo? Is it off a Stinger or are other cars using the same turbo?

Are you seeing any internal damage or shaft play in the turbo you took off? From my experience, a screeching sound from a turbo is often a leak, not damage. If the sound was caused by something failing in the turbo, there should be some sign of it once you get it off.

yeah, $900 is a lot haha I would love to snatch one for $300-$400 from a pull a part.
Especially for an OEM unit which has unknown effectiveness
