So I am dropping my Stinger off for Repaint...

Ya cars do get repainted all the time because there is no other feasible or practical option. This is a 50,000+ car that has been identified with a completely flawed paint system for some colors. Kia would NEVER offer a complete buyback or repaint plus 5,000 bucks if this was a minor issue. NEVER.

My point being that, a repaint without a full strip will never be as good as a factory line spray. Just because some people are "happy" and never report back here does NOT mean it was corrected.

I could let all the reasons why I would consider myself above average to make these comments, as I deal with safety related paint systems almost daily, but in the end, they don't matter and I'm just some random internet guy.

If the cars owners are "happy" with repaints, that's all that matters. But for me, if I owned one of these colors, you can bet your ass KIA would have been buying it back or trading me with a later build date.

You're going to get blasted here for being pragmatic.

Well no, when you respond to people you're just sarcastic and rude. And a quick Google search of your username shows you've been perma-banned before.

Yeah, and a buyback is a totally legitimate option. But if you go with a repaint, you need to be SURE it'll be done right.

Cause that's not creepy at all

Thread necromancy; and irony, given the exchanges above. :P (Welcome, btw.)

None of the colors "are affected" like the Yellow. I doubt that even a majority of Yellows are affected, but a high enough percentage to warrant Kia's special attention, which they are giving. All the colors have at least one "event" attached to them in the poll of paint quality issues. "Ceramic Silver" is your color: it's also been called "Lakestone Grey" and "Ghost Grey" and a couple of other things. As you can see from the poll Discussion of Stinger paint quality (Was - Paint Chip Issue) virtually no issues with that color from any build date. As long as a close inspection of "your" car is made before purchase, you should have confidence that your paint is fine.

Mine is the dark grey, thunder grey in Canada... thanks for the reply... I'm freakin out... I did not inspect that closely because it's a new vehicle purchase.

Keep your eyes open. Inspect the leading edge of the hatch... I bet you see missing paint.

do you have this issue? and what did you do about it?

the vehicle is brand new so I did not think to check it for paint issues!

Best option is just a touch up pen....run it down the edge. Two coats and one clear and you should be good. I made a body shop do it, but I did it myself on my new red one. looks perfect now.

Thanks, what about the other general paint chipping issues? Seems like the dark grey is not affected as much and not necessarily all colors are affected?

@OriginalRobby I've replied to you each time I've seen your angst: it is justified: Nobody should have paint quality issues with any brand new car, let alone one like this for this kind of money.

I'll repeat myself a bit: the poll is available all over the Net. A Google search for any permutation of the search phrase "kia stinger paint chipping/issues/quality/failure/flaking" pulls "our" poll up on the top of the search results. That means that anyone in the world noticing their brand new car showing signs of paint failing will in all likelihood get on the Net and do a search to find out more; and be directed straight here (the link I posted above). To participate in the poll all they have to do is join the forum and click their color. Simple and painless, maybe even cathartic!

Only a total of 5% of our membership have even participated in the poll. That means that 95% of our members either don't know or don't care about the paint issue. Given the worldwide visibility of the poll, this is significant; it says that far less than 3% of Stingers out there have flawed paint that has attracted the attention of their owners.

If you see a chipped hatch edge, or the rear edge of the hood with a chip out of it, that isn't failing paint unless there other things happening: these cars can get damaged in transit; and the hood rear edge chip has been hypothesized (convincingly imho) as a manufacturing process damage point, only on a limited run of cars (no date range has been established; there aren't enough examples to generate enough interest to find out), and the problem was caught and corrected. The hatch lid edge chip is likely the same thing; and the touch up pen and clear coat is a good solution. Edges are particularly easy to fix and the least visible afterward.

Thank you for your reply and support so far... I pick up my car on Saturday ... this is my first ever performance vehicle ... I come from motorcycles riding mostly and well bikes don’t really have such issues with so much less paint surface to worry about :)

I'm going to have a good look at mine now, I haven't noticed any issues so far but I thought I remember seeing a couple bubbles on the edge of doors or the hatch but just figured it was hard dried gobs of paint and not blistering...

I wish I had looked even closer. Missed the rear of the hood chip.

DiabloStinger: Can you show me a pic of how your red one looks? It seems like I might need to do the same as I noticed some missing paint at the hatch edge near the shark fin antenna area , so basically at the very top of the hatch edge area...
