TPMS Question

I had a flashing TPMS light come on yesterday, and I'm trying to figure out if the system is reading a tire low or if there is an actual issue. I just put winter tires on new rims, so either option is in play.

How do I pull up the psi values that the car is reading? I have looked throughout the dash options and the manual and just cant find it anywhere.

Dumb question, but did you put TPMS sensors in your new rims?

Not a dumb question at all haha. Let me give you the rundown.

I took the car to Discount Tire to get my then winter rims put on the car. The winter tires were on 18" Mustang GT rims (which I hoped would work but didn't). Since the old rims didn't work, I needed to get rims and TPMS sensors. I did not observe them swap the tires on the new rims, but I was under the assumption that the new sensors were installed.

Does the fact that I cant pull up a screen with tire pressure information mean that the new sensors are probably not working (if they were even installed)?

Well one of two things could have happened. Either they installed the new TPMS sensors and did not reprogrammed them to your car or they simply did not install them. I'm more inclined to assume the second option.

Correct, if the screen is not showing any pressures that means the receiver is not getting any values from the sensors.

There is no “reprogramming” the tpms.

Driving them (if they are Kia comparable frequency) about 5 miles registers/sets them.

Not really.
You need to have them reprogrammed as each sensor has a unique ID that needs to be programmed into the TPMS receiver. The only way you dont need to reprogram is if you use the ones already working with the car.

Robz not to disprove you... but I bought wheels / tires (with TPMS installed) from TR.com. Delivered to my house and installed them myself.

There was no programming. As long as the tpms is the right frequency, they auto-registered / set after driving about 5 miles.

There was no OBDII or “push the button” programming tool (like my minstang) to get the sensors to work.

Which leads me to believe the OP HAD ONE OF THE FOLLOWING OCCUR :

no tpms sensors installed in wheel/tires from DT

wrong TPMS installed by DT

Just to update: took it back to Discount Tire and they noticed that the rear sensors weren’t responding and they could not be “reprogrammed” or “cloned” with whatever tool they were using. They either replaced the sensors or messed with them, but everything now works great!

Good deal. They used the wrong sensors or failed to add them the first time. I wish people would pay attention to details. Even in crap jobs.

It’s sad that things rarely get done right unless you do it yourself these days.
