i just updated the UVO app today and was promoted to read and accept a new user policy. Pretty standard stuff but interesting what a “connected UVO” car service collects, especially when it comes to driver behaviour. I never thought much about how the system records my driving behaviour and habits. Hmm?

Vehicle and Driver Information:
When you use the UVO System, we may collect Information that is collected, generated, recorded or stored by your Kia vehicle, including:

Information about your vehicle such as:
VIN;
● Model;
● Model year;
● Engine type;
● Service data;
● Mechanical condition; and
● Incidents involving vehicle.

Vehicle diagnostic data, such as:
● Trouble codes;
● Freeze frame data;
● Tire pressure;
● Battery voltage;
● Coolant temperature
● Oil temperature;
● Service requirements; and
● Automatic Collision Notification.

Eco-related driving performance data per trip, such as:
● Fuel consumption; and
● Vehicle greenhouse gas emissions.

Information about your use of the UVO System in-vehicle, such as:
● Customer chosen points of interest for navigation;
● Search content;
● Information about individuals making a UVO call from vehicle or subscriber account;
● Date, time and duration of such calls; and
● Emergency calls (which are recorded).

Information about use of your vehicle, such as:
● Direction of travel;
● Time of travel;
● Odometer reading;
● Fuel level;
● Refuel indication;
● Date of refuel activity; and
● EV Battery Status – charge Level, range, charging status.

Driver behaviour and geolocation Information, such as:
● Vehicle location
● Vehicle speed;

I'm surprised there are no comments on this. They also reserve the right to share any of that data with "as may be permitted or required by law".

Yup - read the fine print before signing up. We live in a digital age where almost every company and service we sign up for is collecting/storing/sharing/selling our data, the biggest being Google (they data mine your emails!). I have no problem with UVO collecting this data. This is what it means to be connected in the 21st century.

Are you worried about them sharing data that you'd rather not; such as sharing every time you go for a spirited drive with your insurance, or law enforcement? Or sharing your navigation routes, POI's etc, with marketing companies?

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

Ya, I've thought about that...like if I was driving spirited and then got in an accident; what could enforcement do with the data and would Kia hand over such data? The question is, do I go for limited functionality in the car, or lock everything down for privacy concerns? It a double edge sword I suppose. Maybe knowing that UVO is collecting speed data and such, might make me more aware of how I drive. Currently, our insurance company has no mechanism in place to collect this type of data so I'm not worried about that, but I do seeing that coming in the future, where rates are determined on many driving factors.

I hear that if you’re wearing your tinfoil hat while driving in sport mode, they have no way of tracking information !

Not true. I'm with TD Meloche Monnex and have their TDMyAdvantage app on my phone. It tracks my braking, speeding, acceleration and cornering. There's no penalties if I'm driving like a speed demon. But I get rewarded through discount on my premium for good driving behaviour. I'll gladly sacrifice any privacy for some money saved on my insurance premium.

I was referring to government insurance from ICBC (Insurance Corporation of BC), which is not private insurance and is mandatory for all BC drivers. We don't have the option to purchase full-out private insurance in BC.

Really??? Obviously your call, but I'd never do that if given the option. We already relinquish private information far too readily in many aspects of our life, IMHO.

As for UVO compiling our driving information, I'm not particularly concerned about that. The reason being that this information is already being collected & stored by our Stingers (and virtually all new vehicles) regardless of whether or not we are subscribed to UVO.

Most vehicles only record about 15-30 seconds of data in a black box that is tied to the airbag system. They record fairly basic data too, such as throttle/brake/steering wheel position, speed, and some other sensor data, rarely do they record GPS tracks. The information is never compiled and beamed up to your manufacturer cloud like the KIA UVO.

Read post #1. Kia would say otherwise.

I presume that you're talking about this line:

"When you use the UVO System, we may collect Information that is collected, generated, recorded or stored by your Kia vehicle, including:"

I read that as UVO simply transmitting the info that is already being collected by the car.

That’s right. There’s a long list of things that the car is keeping track (not just basic data) of and if an owner decides to activate UVO, that info can be collected. To say that Kia never compiles the data is not true. I get monthly data reports emailed to me about the health of my car. Rest assured, Kia is collecting the data as are all the other manufacturers that have cloud based management products in their cars. Gone are the days when data resides at the car level alone. I just listened to a podcast with the CEO of Ford and he was sharing how Ford will and does use the data it collects on all those who drive Ford vehicles. This is where the future is going. No escaping it.
