Door Frame Ticking / Squeaking Elimination

I'm quite confidant I have located the source of my drivers door creaking. I tried the 3 step method and lubed the seals (which was simply masking the issue and not really fixing it) then after few weeks the lube rubbed off anyway and creaking returned. My issue seems to be the weather seal on the chassis of the car itself rubbing against the plastic door trim on the door. When the doors are closed if I press or tap that seal I could replicate the same creaking sound I was getting whilst driving - This only happens on this particular drivers side seal, if I press the same area on the other passenger doors I hear nothing. I cut a few pieces of felt tape and jammed them between the weather seal and plastic door trim and took the car for a drive on my usual bumpy road and no more sound, except now i can hear the sunroof creaking - thats another mystery for another day though!. Now I don't want to stick felt on the door trim as it would look stupid and defeat the whole purpose of a weather seal, so my options are either "try" to have kia replace this under warranty or find a suitable long term lubricant. I've been reading on a lot of BMW forums that their dealerships have been using a product called Gummi Pflege or Carbaflo KSP105 (quite expensive) to quieten down seals.

Hey. I just read through all the posts and this is different to the problem I am having. Mine is in the panel BETWEEN the front and back passenger doors. This is the panel which houses the seat belt. And of course as I mentioned on our run today, I discovered yet ANOTHER exterior rattle to the pre-existing one. Am not happy.

Book it in at your Service Centre, the panel you mention is called the “B” pillar & explain the noises & take the service rep on a run to replicate the noises so that will narrow it down for them to rectify.

Yes one of the most annoying things is when a car like this has rattles / squeaks and takes away the pleasure of driving it. I'm sure the roads you were on today (except for the highway of course) would have made any rattle very noticeable. We might have great views down this way but we also have some of the crappiest roads to get to them

Yes rattles absolutely take away from the driving pleasure. They are apparent on the highway also, not just bad roads. I hear them ALL the time.

You might have Misophonia. Like me any little rattle / creak / squeak annoys me no end

Although to be fair it sounds like yours are very noticeable

I find rattles themselves bug me, but my issue probably stems more from some form of OCD, once I hear a rattle it becomes a mission to find and fix it. Obsession is the key word.

GENTS AND LADIES! I believe I found a new fix. I have/had an annoying tick/rattle from what sounded like the rear driver door. I played with seatbelts, the cargo cover strings, hatch, and I've done the "3 step" fix. Nothing seemed to work. Today, I used my magical noise diagnostic knuckle and found a very familiar annoying sound on the upper part of the weatherstripping on the door. This weather strip is held down by vertical pins, I found they (but one in the back in particular) are very loose and easy to pull out of their locating holes in the door. As shown in the picture, as a temporary measure, I wedged some paper towel between the weatherstripping and the door, particularly near the pin furthest to the back of the door. I drove over some of the more nasty roads on the way back to work. While time will prove if this was the source of the problem, I'm feeling darn good right now.

I think the best fix will be to wrap these retainer pins with a wrap of felt tape or equivalent to isolate the plastic from the metal door.

tbh sounds as just variation of original fix in the first post of this thread.

Actually I found out after revisiting, this was done by StingerNYC on page 2. This is just the weatherstripping on the door, and I think my ticking/rattling was probably unique to my car...the rear most pin was very loose and probably not the norm. It was quiet yesterday and has been quiet this morning since I did the fix last night. Of course that suspect pin broke when I tried to remove it (I have the worst luck with retainers), but it's all padded now, so whatever. Quiet is good and it doesn't look broken.

Hey guys! So I’m unsure if my “creeking” or rubbing noise is unique to me but after I tried everything without a solution, I decided to compare my normal door to the door with the issue. I noticed the following.

In the far upper corner where the weatherproofing/rubber seal meets the plastic trim, the normal door was arranged in such a way where the rubber was “tucked” underneath the plastic trim. The rubber seal on the door with the noise was not tucked. In hopes that this would fix the issue (in addition to the DIY here), I used small drivers to tuck the portion of the rubber under the plastic trim and ever since, I do not hear the same rubbing noise! Occasionally, I would hear it when the car is going over large bumps and stuff but long story short, my source of the noise was due to the plastic trim not being tightened up by the rubber seal.

To anyone that has attempted the solution provided in this thread, I would advise you to give this a try. I can’t guarantee it will work but who knows! I will post some photos for reference when the sun is up.

On my rear door, I had a rattle from that area - the rear-most retainer pin that holds the weatherstripping to the door. Upon trying to remove that retainer pin, it broke off, so I just insulated it with foam and there is no longer a rattle. I wonder if your ticking was from these same retainer pins - they tap against the door a little bit. Maybe wedging that weatherstripping where you did it holding it down tighter and keeping the pins from tapping against the metal door frame.

Might be a good idea to troubleshoot. NOTE, I had two sources of noises.

1. Ticking around the door frame (i.e. per this thread/DIY)
2. Door panel creaking/squeaking (both front doors) - reproducible when there is some car flex like turning up or down a driveway. Also reproducible by just pressing hard against certain sections of the door panel. I'll create another DIY hopefully by this weekend.

If it makes a difference my build date is May 2018 and I'm 99 percent sure my noise is coming from the door panels and not the weather stripping/molding around the outside edge. Just haven't had the time or patience to dig into it yet

Very possible late 2018 builds and/or MY 2019 builds don't have the squeak and ticking issues. Same with the rear hatch rattle. We'll have to hear back from owners.
