Discussion of Stinger paint quality (Was - Paint Chip Issue)

I asked for 2k for the additional painting plus the 5k and I would have been good. I only have two paint chips, but at less than 400 miles and the fact that they are on the doors again bothers me. One paint chip is down to the metal, the other one is just down the primer, about 2 mm each. Seriously contemplating a Tesla Model 3. Forturnately, the paint shop has a lifetime warranty on their work. If it is a paint problem then I should have no problem getting it repainted again.

I understand your feeling 100%. Silly me, I just asked for common courtesy and to have them do their job correctly. I was even nice about it, got the screw job anyway.

View attachment 8320 I posted this earlier. I found a chip at the rear edge of the hood on the driver side, days after getting it May 18th. The dealer is getting a touch up for me, wasn’t in stock in red. Odd color not to have stock? OK, it’s near where the wiper arm would strike but not really as I can pull up arm and it’s not near the chip zone. So some magic would need to apply. A rock hitting at that speed to do the damage would have to have struck the windshield too and would have left a mark, at least logic would seem so. Right now it’s the only one I seem to have. Clear Bra goes on next week. I hope it’s a one off and not just the first. But I am concerned.

My red Stinger had the exact same thing. Manufacture date 12/17.

Ouch! Yet another case of do it yourself going south. If, IF, I ever debadge and rebadge, I will let the pros do it and fix their own mistakes. But hell, the paint should never have come up in the first place. That's the bottom line issue; adhesion.

I'm going to believe that this is a brief period of manufacturing damage, afterward corrected; that the cars we've seen with this got through the inspection without being noticed. It isn't exactly a flag waver, you have to stare right at it to notice it in the first place; or have someone point it out to you, like on this forum.

Who is making you use a particular paint shop? Kia VIP line had me get my own estimate. I dropped my car at KiA and they took it to my paint shop. Never any question or push back on the shop. Tons of pushback on covering the cost.

I got absolutely no where on getting my own choice of shop. Was told no continually, and that only the dealership I dropped the car at was allowed to choose.

In that one pic, I see three palpable rock chips and one very large peeling patch of clear coat. Also, from the reflection, it looks like your clear coat is "orange peel" textured. Is that accurate? If so, you can legitimately complain about that alone. I am confident that KIA will not accept such shoddy work on their cars still under warranty.

Yes, there are some legitimate rock chips, but with a clear coat this bad, ANYTHING that has hit the bumper has left a mark. I'm being told the peeling patch is rock chip which is complete bullshit. As for Orange peel, I can not find anything at this time.

@MattRain - the service manager is supposed to call today. I'll mention that body shop by name and that I will not be taking it there... if they fight back i'll go to the Kia dealer in Tempe and work through them.

Just no time for playing games with dealers or body shops. I have plenty of friends who are lawyers who can write a nice letter for me pertaining to personal loss in regards to time spent handling their own issues.

My rebage was horrendous on red stinger! Paint flaked off in chunks. Paint guy at body shop said that should never have happened and that this paint is unacceptable.
As to paint chips I thought I was doing well until earlier this evening when I opened the hatch. Up under the hatch lip I saw several white chips. I’ve also noticed clear coat scratches (scuffs) on rear passenger door handle and several other in the general area. I love my Stinger but it’s pissing me off . I’ve never spent this much on a car before and I expect a beautiful ride at this price point. (I’ve got less than 1500 miles on the car, manufacture date 12/17).

If it’s not too bad try a paint pen and see how it holds up. Maybe buy some time for KIA to admit the faulty paint issue or for your paint to get worse overall (unfortunately). Or if you don’t want to wait just take it to a body shop. Take pictures first.

Back there quite a ways on this thread (I think it's this one and not one of the other "paint issues" threads), someone measured the thickness of primer, paint and clear coat on other cars to compare to the Stinger's. Iirc, c. 4.3something mils (one mil equals 1/1000 of inch) for the Stinger; Audi, BMW, et al. land in the 4.5 to 4.7 mils. A typical body shop job will be over 5.something mills. So the Stinger's over all coverage isn't that thin. The problem is adhesion, not thickness. Also, the quality of the paint is good, according to information shared here "back there a ways", from at least two body shops, which said the paint is really good quality stuff. It's the adhesion on some cars that is the issue, not the paint quality itself. You look on the Net and you'll see some "scary thin readings" on Mazdas and even Porsches. One Porsche on the doors was returning 1.8 mils!? The Stinger's paint thickness is in the average of 4 to 5 mils, closer to 4 than 5.

I have had my car repainted and I can emphatically say that you're wrong.

Kia has a process, that process leaves thin paint. I was like you until I went through this with Kia. I thought that reason would prevail. I too was wrong.

Something needs to change there.

So, mine is in getting the front bumper resprayed for the second time @ 4k miles. I had the peeling paint issue under my driver's side headlight. My dealership has been exceptional with me throughout this process, annoying as it is. They did not hesitate to offer a respray at 2k miles when I initially found the problem. But now, a month later, it's happening again. At this point, we're all in agreement that it's not necessarily the paint, but a poor design. The bumper rubs against the headlight causing the paint to peel. It's currently getting resprayed, and they're attempting to reposition the bumper a bit so it doesn't rub anymore. We'll see how it turns out, but they've already told me I will never be responsible for any repairs in the future.

*********So, after seeing this issue for a second time, the manager of the dealership decided to inspect all of the Stingers on his lot. He reported back that EVERY Stinger on his lot has the same paint peeling issue around the headlight!!!!!! He's reporting the issue to Kia.**********
