Daily Drive with a Tune

From what I have read one of the major advantages to the JB4 is that it has the ability to use the ODBII to gain access to information about the car. I think the quote below from their site explains it. As far as I know there is no wireless interface that the JB4 can use to get this information so to connect it you would need to run the cable.

I think I read somewhere that if you don't use the ODBII connection you would be limited to MAP 1? I will try and find the discussion where I saw that so don't quote me on that yet.

"Unlike other tuning systems the JB4 includes a fully programmable CANbus system, upgradable firmware, and data logging capability. CANbus allows the JB4 to take in to account pedal input, throttle position, gear, engine speed, air/fuel ratio, fuel trims, ignition advance, knock, and many other factors and incorporate those in to the performance mapping. It can also read/delete fault codes, incorporate unique safety features such as keeping boost pressure low until oil and water is up to temperature to provide proper engine and turbo lucubration, and drop to a low boost map if the engine starts to over heat, run lean, excessively knock, or over
boost."

Snipe I got all mixed up too on the semantics of it all.....do yourself a favor and get the jb4 connect with phone app.....as Terry sez you have to run to your obdi to get full advantages of the jb4 along with hooking up the 2 fuel wires..... im old used up and it only took me a lil bit to run the obdi wire from the lb4box to the obdi plug in the car....theres a big rubber grommet that you push the wire thru...no biggie
I was all mixed up on this...YES you must hook up to the obdi to get full usage of the jb4 end of story ....Wash

Thanks but I didn't ask that question. I was always planning on running the ODBII. When I was younger one of my jobs was car audio installation. I don't have any issue running this wire.

Hi All

I will be receiving my JB4 today and installing it in the next couple of weeks after I get my plugs replaced. My question is to those with a tune. Do you always have a higher map selected even during normal daily driving or do you keep map 0 selected until you want to race or have fun? Is it safe to run map 1 or map 2 all the time or better to keep map 0 until you really need the extra power?

One last thing... I think I saw it posted somewhere but I can't fine it now. I have access to 93 octane but need to go out of my way to get it. I have a WAWA that I go to all the time but they only offer 92. Any recommendations here? Will the 92 suffice or should I go out of the way for 93? I plan on running map 1 and map 2 nothing higher (I say that now!).

Thanks,
Ian

Hey man, another local native here! I grew up in Chester Springs/Exton/Downingtown/West Chester area, live in Reading now. Not down your way too much but might run into you sometime!

As far as 93 octane, there's a Shell station there on 113 & 30, I believe they have 93 maybe even 94. And there's the Sunoco down towards Exton at 30 & Whitford Road.

Also, I only have a couple hundred miles with the JB4 up and running but I've been running it on Map 1 the whole time, no issues at all, nothing but more fun! I'll be switching to Map 2 and keeping it there as well this weekend probably.

Thanks! It would be cool to run into someone else with a Stinger. I have only seen about 3 of them in the area.

I am familiar with where the stations are in the area. My question was more around do I have to go with 93 over 92? Those gas stations with 93 are fine but the WAWA is on my way to everything but only has 92. Those other stations aren't on my way to anything and I would have to go out of my way every time I needed gas. Since I fill up 2 to 3 times a week I would rather not go to them if I don't have to. I think I will go with the 92 and see if I have any issues. Knowing that Terry does the tuning in CA with 91 I should be fine especially since I don't plan on running anything other than map 2.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...

Awesome! Did you change your plugs? Now that I have the JB4 in my hands I really really want to install it but I know I should swap the plugs first.

I put the DENSO plugs in before even installing the JB4 and ran with the plugs for a few days.

Also, I would recommend staying away from Wawa fuel unless in an absolute pinch. Fuel quality isn't very good. I would stick with Top Tier, especially since we have GDI engines.

What are you talking about?... JB4 is your masterpiece, how do you not know this???
I really hoped I wouldn’t have to comment about your posts again but after this I just had to...:cautious:

I can’t tell if your just trying to make fun of Terry, or honestly ignorant enough not to know what hes talking about. Lol.

He and everyone else is obviously talking about the the OBDII connection to the JB4. I’m pretty sure that without that wire running through the firewall and connected to the JB4 your losing out on whole lot! Most of the important engine information the JB4 depends on(AFR, Ign, IAT, RPM, ECI boost, etc) all run through this cable. I believe that means the fuel wires and fuel bias controls won’t work correctly either. Also, the JB4 App won’t display all those items in real-time which is extremely helpful.

Hopefully just a misunderstanding and you’re running the OBDII wire correctly, but thinking Terry doesn’t know about his own product is laughable.

It sucks that you have such weak control of your faculties. You have my sincerest apologies.

Now, let me break this down for you, Barney style...

Sabz asked...

Is there anyway to use the jb4 without running the cable through the firewall? Or is this the only way?

To which I replied...

I use my laptop to make changes to my JB4. It isn't as quick as those using Bluetooth but it eliminates the need to run the plugs through the firewall.

I simply pop the hood, plug the JB4s USB cable to my computer, and make firmware/map/etc changes. Then just disconnect it and close the hood.

To which Terry asked...

Terry said:
How does using the hard wire data cable instead of the bluetooth adapter eliminate running wires in the car?

To which I answered...

Kamauxx said:
When I update the firmware I hook it up to my computer, make the changes, and put everything back. It doesn't need to be routed to the car for any of that.

Sabz didn't ask "what is the best way?", or "will fuel wires work?", or "will I be able to take full advantage of all the features?". He asked "IS THIS THE ONLY WAY".

Forrest, your ass is way too stupid to be so arrogant. In the future read all of the relevant posts before spewing your finger diarrhea in hopes of being Terry's Knight in Duct taped armor.

^^^^ yea I simply was wondering if I could use it without the obdII cord.. if cord is that easy to run then I probably would however if it’s difficult I wouldn’t use it because you would need to remove every time the car went in..

Sabz It was you I was replying to not Snipe...sorry for the mixup Snipe....My take on this deal is....Ive got the JB4 with the JB4 Bluetooth connect....no you don't have to have it....but to be able to make changes on the fly its truly genius ! If you are gonna have a tune box that can do some pretty neat things with a cell phone app why not? Like today ive been running map2 and map3 with not one problem...so I tried map 5 after a member over at n54tech said it was bad to the bone....well heck my phone was connected to the JB4 via Bluetooth , and sitting in the cup holder so I can see all the gauge data....I simply punched in map5 for a lil pull to see what it was like....I was near the casa headed home ,and did a run to 60 or so...it pulled so hard it overcame traction control....that's a Good thing! So, okay I get home in the garage, and smelled something like hot rubber...Rot roh...go to the front of the car...nope no smell coming from the front....walk to the back, and it was the tires....lol.... this lil red gal was smoking the tires down the street...next thing I did after wiping the big fat smile off my face was to send the logging data from the phone to my pc where I looked at the csv file, and saw that everything was happy at over 17 pounds of boost....but to be sure I posted the file over at the n54tech site where Terry will look over the file for me....if all it takes is a lil thin wire going from the obdi port thru the rubber grommet that's already there in the firewall to the JB4 under the hood...I ask you...why not? Why sure ill be pulling the cable ,and the JB4 out when she goes in to the dealer...it aint no big deal...im older than dirt....got a torn up shoulder from a motorcycle wreck ,got two artificial knees, and a host of other crap ...and if I can run the cable ,and remove it anytime I want....then how hard is it to do?...lol ....the box simply needs to interface with the obdi /Canbus of the car to get everything that the JB4 offers, and yes you need the two fuel wires hooked up to get the best out of the JB4....once again easy to put on ,and easy to remove ,with really no trace using the Posi Taps provided........anyone that's wanting up to date info needs to go to the n54 site, and go to the kia forum/thread....that's where you find the poop on this box ,and that's where Terry hangs out....sorry for the long winded reply :) Wash
