Transmission Upper Power Limit

Around what wheel horsepower will the transmission become a weak link?

  • ~400WHP

  • ~450WHP

  • ~500WHP

  • ~600WHP

No one knows because no one has broken one from too much power. Go look in the Tuning threads for what cars are making now, it’s above that.

I'm more than sure someone has, we just don't know about it, lol... This car's a veritable gold mine of modding excitement: having an actually fast Kia is worth the smiles and damaged egos

So if no one knows about it, how do you expect this thread to go? o_O

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
You may want to modify your question a bit. Transmission ratings/limits are in torque. You can have a 600whp car with 500 ft lb torque or 800 ft lb torque.

^ That, torque is what really breaks things. I'd say I think the transmission can probably handle anything the stock turbos can throw at it at this point. Honestly I'm more concerned about the diff and the AWD's transfer case.

While this is entirely true (and I'm keenly aware as my older car had torque ratings well above its horsepower after mods [I was around 370HP, 420FTLBs]), there is still a relation between horsepower and torque. In order to have your example with 600WHP and only 500FTLBs on the 3.3TT's setup would require extreme modification deep into the engine's core components. For example, I don't think anyone will be messing with boring the engine or swapping cams for awhile, not until they first hit the wall of the stock core components

Or in other words, at that point, they've broken the transmission already and now know its limit.

You'd have to ask this question on a Korean forum. They're the ones doing the big power mods to their Stingers. By comparison our "modding" is child's play.

This was already discussed multiple times but cant remember the names of the other threads. However, I feel like the consensus was that the engine & transmission limits were around 800HP/TQ!

I know there are tuners in S.Korea that added bigger turbos and are already pushing 500-600WHP. I havent read about any issues or failures yet so we probably have a little more to go before hitting transmission limits.

However, if I had to guess which part of our Stingers is the weakest link I would think its the LSD. Unfortunately there are dozens of cases of differentials failing and I happened to be one of them. I'm hoping it was just a defective part, but that and the plugs/coils seem to be the weakest links so far...

I'd be interested in reading more on those. My concern is the tcase and front driveline of the AWD.

Interesting info, thanks for chiming in. 800HP/FTLBs is a pretty lofty ceiling, though, for a car of this price. But if South Korean tuners are already pushing 600WHP, that means we have to wait awhile to find out what the reliability is rather than what the absolute breaking point is. Though, it does seem MY FRIEND has nothing to worry about with mods.
