why do hatchbacks get a bad rap?

i see a few blogs around the net have comments from people who talk about hatchbacks like they're old civics or plymouth sundances. yeah those were not very cool cars back in the day. but i think people forget that the fox body mustang gt was a hatchback. everybody either loved that car because it was fast or hated it also because it was fast. camaro? firebird? and isn't the corvette technically a hatchback? forget the fact that the porsche panamera is a hatch because some people still can't get over how porsche is making it or even the suvs.

To be honest, I miss my previous hatchback and glad I'm going back to one. It's really a pain in the rear to go grocery shopping and get toilet paper or paper towels in those huge packages, get to your car and you have plenty of room in the trunk for it but alas, it won't FIT through the trunk opening and so I have to check both sides of the car for door clearance, open up a door all the way (or partially pull out of the parking space if not enough room), tilt a seat forward, toss the package in the back, etc. etc. No, I'm not lazy! I just try to keep physical labor as efficient as possible! LOL

As usual it is a matter of taste and preferences. I want a good looking car but why would it be bad if it is also practical? My car gets used for shopping and for travelling. As Taimishoo said: nice to have a large trunk but if the opening is just a small slot it drives me crazy. This is why I did not go for another Jaguar XF. It was a great car, no problems at all, also good-looking - but not a hatchback. It was almost impossible to load two bags without folding the back seats and loading through the door.

The Stinger is a perfect combination. Even if all other hatchbacks were ugly old bangers - who cares? Some people always find a reason to criticize. Let them babble.

I think hatches are coming back. And not only "hot hatches". Fully functional, large, luxury hatches. Kia did a great job making the Stinger look like a sedan even though it has five doors. People just forget that they actually had (or have) a few hatchbacks they love...

I'm so glad that "unboxy" hatches are back. I really regretted having to trade in my Z28. While it didn't have the height of Stinger's cargo area, it was able to handle my best friend's entire wardrobe and part of her hubby's when they moved, and still look sexy-sporty.

I was an F-Body fanatic. Those were hatches that I loved and I owned quite a few of them. That was a long time ago and the newest one I owned was a 1990. But the following generation was even nicer - mainly toward the end...

Most of the car reviews I've seen recently seem to be very positive about hatchbacks and wanting them to make a comeback (which they are). Enthusiasts generally hate the crossover popularity trend, so they welcome a smaller car with better driving dynamics (yet also the utility of a hatch) with open arms.

Yeah, I see the same. I think there's a stigma with some people but for the most part people are happy to see them. Especially owners (naturally)...

My mom had a Dodge Omni back in the day. I think that's why people don't like hatch backs.
