So I went looking for the ODB port and found this behind the fuse panel instead:

Is there any reason for this mass of wires and components to be hanging free inside the fuse panel instead of being...ya know...securely and neatly mounted somewhere?

Looks like someone did a shitty job installing a remote start..

Awesome, that must be what it is, thanks -- installed by a 3rd party contractor for the dealer. Where should/could that all be mounted?

Not there!

Someone on here has installed the factory remote start, they should be able to tell you. ... yours is factory/oem, right? You use the regular remote to start the car remotely?

The OE remote start module is supposed to be mounted in the passenger kick panel. That box have any labels or part numbers on it?
Yeah, just looks like a lazy install.

Is there an actual mounting frame there?

ADS-AL CA and Directed 4X052 --- Yep, google tells me it's probably a remote start and interface.

Do I have any recourse on quality? Should I bother trying?

I'd poke around and see if you can find installation info from this manufacturer, and see if they did it right.

Personally I would like to know why they went with this, instead of the OEM unit.

No mounting point, it just tucks in next to the stock IBU.

I don't think the install is criminally or dangerously bad - just a little lazy. Make sure the points where the wires attach to the harnesses - especially the larger ones - are tightly attached. They did wrap everything. I've certainly seen far worse.

e.g., this is a dangerously bad wiring job done by a "professional" shop.

They apparently didn't have a weatherpack crimper and didn't want to replace the connector, so they just shoved bare wires into the connector then wrapped a few yards of electrical tape around it.

This is the fuel pump connector on a 50's Chevy truck converted with a '96 Roadmaster driveline.

FWIW, looking at the docs for that box, looks like the installer followed the manufacturer's guidance. Can't ask for much more, really. It's a multi-purpose, multi-make module so the install won't be a slick as an OE module.
Looks like that module supports takeover. If they got that set up right then I'd say it's more valuable than the OE remote start.

You also might want to reach back out to your dealer to see if they have the work order for that, or at least something saying they installed it. Unfortunately if there is an issue down the road, a dealer will find that and question covering anything electrical related.
