I was drying off my car today and noticed something odd ... a circular dull spot under the paint.

Hood.webp

I had to quickly dry the car out in the sun today, and I guess I never noticed this before because I always do it in the shade. At first I thought it was some kind of reflection or something, but it wasn't. I've never seen a paint defect that looked like this!

Crop circle?

It’s odd alright. Has a rotary buffer been used on the car at all? Looks a bit like a buffer has been left stationary in the one spot for too long and has created a wear mark.

It looks like a kind of milky spot, about 8" across, that is under the clearcoat. So I don't think it's a buffer mark.

Have you looked under the hood? Probably a very long shot, but maybe something is doing something haha.

Looks like what happens to wooden furniture surfaces when you put a wet glass down on it. Can you still see it after it's been sitting for a while?

That totally sucks, Mike.... sorry to make light of it. The notion just struck me funny.

Seems you could have left bird poop on your pain for too long and etched the paint, also is disturbing how many swirls your car paint has, a good compound and polish with a microfiber pad will fix this.

looks like haze from a buffer.

Buy you some menzerna fg400, white pad and a da polisher. That may well come off. Your paint needs it anyway, swirl city. I do a bit of detailing on the side, if any of this sounds daunting to you, seek out a reputable detailer. Before you decide, watch some YouTube video’s. Others may have some advice, I like fg400 because it has excellent correction ability but finishes down like a polish reducing the need to do a 3 step correction. If you were near me I would do the hood for you for free.

Does the texture of that area feel any different from the surrounding areas? What all have you done to the car surface besides washing it?

I'm tending to think there was some minor damage and the touch up was crap.

It's perfectly round. Something got left sitting on the hood. That can't be a paint defect. It's got to be in the clear coat. I'd be visiting my local body shop for ideas.

Thanks for the tips, guys. Been busy lately and didn't get back to the forum.

Yes, I know the swirls are there - in my experience it's just part and parcel of black paint. :( But they look worse because of the angle of the sun and the fact I was just wiping it down after a wash. I almost think they're worseo n thsi car than most ...

Shrikecorp, no sweat. I thought it was funny.

I'll have the dealer look at it when I go in for my oil change in a couple weeks. Thing is, even if they offer to repaint the hood, I'm probably not going to do it. My experience with repainting parts of cars is not good. Now, if they can buff it out or something, that might be an option.

AV8R - Odd you say that, because it was the first thing I thought of. And with Hyundai and Kia engines catching fire, I cringed. ;)
