Valve Clearance Adjustment

Ugh... So you have to pull the cams to get at the tappets (on the stinger)?
On cars and motorcycles that use tappets (or shim under bucket) like this, yes!

But they rarely, if ever, actually need adjustment

You can obviously measure the valve clearance without removing the camshafts. And you are likely to measure "within spec"

^^Yes, I'm familiar with concept. Had 2 bikes that had that style valvetrain. Fortunately never actually had to pull 'em to adjust because I got rid of the bikes before it was time. One bike I did have to adjust on had rocker arms that slid out of the way to get the shim out. That was a mid 90's bike with a zx11 based engine.

And I suspect (hypothesize) that when it was time - the next owner just had to measure, but never had to make adjustments, because they measured in spec.

I've owned a 1996 GSX-R 750 that I rode to about 130K KMs (odometer stopped at 99,999 - no rollover). Had to track the remainder with a GPS.

Measured the valves a few times - never needed any adjustment, always within spec.

I remember it like it was yesterday - but it was Aug 2009. Was riding with my buddies on the Cherohala Skyway near the NC/TN boarder. As I approached 99,999, getting ready for the Kodak moment, a fellow rider (stranger) crashed right in front of me at 99,995. He was ok, as he was appropriately geared up, and landed in the bushes with a bruised ego.

Once it got to 99,999, it simply stopped counting (even trip1 and trip2 stopped counting). I expected a rollover.

Guess it wasn't expected to go that far!

Fortunately, I had a (good for the time) GPS, Garmin 2710, which logged milage for me after 99,999

I miss those days!

Sorry for the off topic nostalgia . I don't do that often.
