This is a TPMS issue. But not the usual helpless “it’s winter and my light turned on” malarkey.

In September I purchased a set of aftermarket wheels/tires with TPMS sensors. They were installed at the local Costco with no issues. TPMS synced up nicely and away I went.

Fast forward to winter in the PNW and I put my stock wheels/tires back on. Got a “Check Tire Pressure Monitoring System” error with no pressures showing. I made sure all 4 tires were aired up to >40PSI. I also drove the car for several 1 hour jaunts with varying speeds to ensure the system had time to sync up. I’ve even read the mystical owner’s manual to ensure I haven’t missed a step here.

I’m at a loss. Anyone have a similar problem and associated solution before I head into the dealership?

Thanks!

"Check system" means that the TPMS and the receiver are not sending and receiving. There isn't anything we can do without hooking the car up to Kia's diagnostics 'puter. If this were just a matter of inflation above 36 psi and running until everything reset itself, that would have happened within minutes. It doesn't take an hour.

Almost immediate follow-up after a phone call with Costco.

Against the instructions of the work order, the techs *removed* the TPMS from all four OEM wheels and installed them in the new wheels. They put standard valves back into the OEM wheels.

Technically nothing is malfunctioning, as there are no TPMS valves in my OEM wheels now. ‍

Now I get to go in for my refund of $300, since I paid them to explicitly NOT do this.

um, excuse me for doing some simple math here, but...what became of the TPMS sensors they removed (or never installed) from the NEW wheels you provided in September?

You know, it's easy to be mad that they did this. But really, in a world full of humans, you will see them make mistakes. And it's not that they make mistakes that matters; it's how they recover from those mistakes that matters. In this case, 3 months later, Costco not only discovered the mistake, they admitted it to you and are making it right.

That there's pure gold. Don't be mad. Go in smiling and thankful for them helping you through this.

Certainly not angry. Simple mistake to be sure.

The issue is that I paid them specifically to provide and install new TPMS sensors for the new wheels. Instead of doing that, they just scavenged my OEM units.

As opposed to making them perform more work, I’ll just get my refund for the new TPMS that never got installed and check my pressures like an adult for the next 5 months. :)

Ah. Did you buy new wheels and TPMS sensors from Costco? I took it to mean you bought aftermarket wheels that had TPMS sensors with them. Costco sells winter tire packages? On staggered setups?

$300. Good thing you caught that.

I bought aftermarket wheels that I supplied to Costco. I bought the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires from Costco, and paid them to include the TPMS in the install. I bought this setup knowing I was only going to run them for a few months then swap back to the OEM setup for winter.

My winter tires are the OEM Primacy touring tires with additional siping added on the OEM wheels I painted. They’re not ideal, just better than the PS4S that were on the summer setup.

Hah! That's great. I took 4 new bare wheels, with valves installed, and 4 tires to a shop to mount, and they tried to charge me for disposing of the non-existant old tires and for the non-existant valve stem kits.
