hey! i'm new here but i've owned a gt1 awd since 2019...just had it's third birthday haha. i'm no car pro AT ALL and need some help so i've been on here all afternoon trying to do some tire research. i'm in the city (chicago) so i get heat and snow but my main problem is potholes, sidewall damage and nails. so many nails. i am going through tires like crazy. i'm currently in the michelin pilot sport 4S, staggered, 225/40 ZR19 and 255/35. is there such a thing as a more durable tire for city driving? maybe less performance oriented, or a different compound or makeup?

and...i'm considering switching to squared setup so i can rotate, not that wear has been my issue yet.
thanks for help and tips on saving me from tire poverty

yeah based on a lot of posts and tirerack i think i'm leaning toward

EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 PLUS - SIZE: 225/45ZR18

they sound like they have improved sidewall construction

225 squared looks wimpy on the Stinger, in my considered opinion. If I ever go square I'm going to work out a way to go 255 all around, on 18" wheels. None of this will answer your main beef about "going through tires like crazy", because debris on the roads will remain unavoidable. There may be a tire brand that has "reinforced" sidewalls, but if so, I have never heard of it. If our local roads were as bad as you describe for Chicago, I'd definitely give up even a significant degree of performance to get a more tough tire. And avoid the worst roads by taking a longer way around.

any 225 pics for reference?

I just totaled up my receipts and I’ll be buying my 7th and 8th new tires not including stock tires
and just under 30k miles

Switch to 18” square all seasons.
from the tire calc and posts, i'm understanding i can do this without purchasing new rims right? equivalent would be 225 40 19?

Not really, you'd be rotating wider rims front to rear, with a wide and a narrow rim on each end, and then wider rims in front and narrower in back. The 225 would have a more stretched sidewall on the 8.5" wide rims. If you pushed the car at all, I believe the handling would be wonky/unsafe. To run square, you need four wheels the same width. And if you're going to do that, then get the 18" wheels to gain that extra protection (and increased comfort as a bennie).

I'm sorry you have to suffer chicago too.

Size in my sig has worked well for the stock 18 x 8.0 wheels. I may go up to 245/45/18 next time around to get a slightly more sidewall cushion.

Stock was bridgestone re97as02 in 225/45/18. According to tirerack, that tire has a overall diameter of 25.9" and 803 revs per mile. The 245/40/18 PS AS4 is 25.9" and 804 revs per mile. So effectively the same. In a 45 series it's 26.7" and 780 revs/mile. Based on the garmin gps, the stock size (and current 245/40/18) show a speed of ~1-2 mph faster than actual (gps) at 60 mph. The larger diameter should take care of that and might even introduce a small error in the other direction (car going faster than indicated). We'll see what the time comes.

You will need at least one pair of wheels. Putting wider/offset wheels on the front is not a good idea, even if they have the same size tire as the other axle wheels. According to the owner's manual, your fronts should already be 18x8.0.

Might be a good time to go aftermarket wheels and sell your OE.

Re tires, either the conti's you mentioned earlier or the PS AS4's are a good choice. Went with the latter because I've had good experience with the AS3, PSS, and pilot series on the motorcycles. May try conti's next time.

Flirting with "Nine you're fine, ten you're mine", if you do that. :P That will be your first clue, getting you for more than ten over. Hah.

Or I could just slow down!!!! ;)

It's just a thought. With roads as good as they are around here I slow down (way down) for all rail road crossings.

Where I've moved to last year the roads (goat tracks) are horrendous, i can't avoid them as there is only one road in and out of the town. Its 11km of pot holed country road.

I started pricing 4wd drives and a trade in. The Stinger got a reprieve with news in the local rag suggesting road works on that road from October to January.
