Yeah, I'm not expecting this car with no autonomous driving and being horrible on fuel economy to be worth a hell of a lot when I sell it a decade from now. For the kind of commuting I do believe me I'd love an EV with a ~250 mile range, although the last thing the Stinger needs is more weight.

along with every other ICE car on the planet at least according to Bob Lutz love him or hate him -

http://www.autonews.com/article/20171105/INDUSTRY_REDESIGNED/171109944/industry-redesigned-bob-lutz

I'm old enough to remember the good times and appreciate that THESE ARE NOW THE GOOD OLD DAYS with cars almost at their peak, for as long as they last.
I'll have to read the full article later but if it's scaring everyone into buying a car today because they won't be here tomorrow, I'm not falling for it. Autonomous functionality is going to get better and better but it'll be here to compliment the driving experience - not replace it - for most of our lives. In other words, we're not going to lose the ability to actually "drive" in our lifetime. Again, this may not be what the article is about and I'll get to it later. :)

I agree. In the future, far off, yes, there will be autonomous vehicles. But in order that to TRULY happen, every single vehicle on the road would need to be autonomous, sensors in the roads, etc. and every single vehicle will have to be able to communicate, FLAWLESSLY, with every other vehicle probably at least within a few mile radius so that car A will broadcast that I'm traveling 60MPH and in 3000ft, I will be making a left hand turn so that all other cars will be able to say, well, I'm traveling at 60MPH and I will be reaching where the first car is turning about the same time so I better speed up, slow down, etc. as to avoid a collision and all the other cars will then receive info that the first car is turning, the second car is speeding up just a little, i better slow down to 51MPH in order to avoid a collision with the 5th car, etc. etc. etc.

The biggest problem with autonomous vehicles is that, well, it can't account for the human factor. So to fix this, they would have to remove ALL human input at the same time, in all vehicles, world wide. I just don't see it happening in our lifetime.

Exactly. We're not going to have to worry about this in most of our lifetimes. If you're 18 today, maybe you will. But by the time it happens - you won't care anymore. Period. Everyone can exhale and stop worrying. :)

Can't wait to tell tales of brave men and women who have to use their hands to shift gears and steer, feet to accelerate and brake, and most importantly have to actually pay attention to the road and other cars. I hope my grand-children will believe this outrageous story.

You young whipper snappers! You don't know what 'roughing it' means! Why, back when we were kids we had to pass driving tests and get these here things called driver's licences. And we had to pay attention to the roads and other drivers. Why, we even had to drive 40 miles, in the snow, both ways and uphill just to get to work! We even had to <coughing fit> learn to parallel park!

LOL! You guys are funny! We may look back on this discussion in 40 years and see it's become reality.

Yes! Remember too when we had to look out for traffic cops and radar traps! You children nowadays don't know nuthin for sure.

Even kids today don't get why sometimes the back seat pockets are called maps pockets.

Believe it or not kids of 2037, that was actually a thing, we needed to fold paper maps out and drive. I was invited onto many road trips because I was good at reading the maps. Physical maps!

I was the designated map FOLDER when I was younger. :)

You young 'uns of 2037, well let me tell you what is was really like. We'd pack up and head for the game maybe runnin' a tad late so it was full on with both hands on the wheel, one arm outside gesturing and one wrenching around that stick shift thingy. All the while with both eyes ahead, plus one on the speedo and one on the rear view mirror lookin' for Smokey incoming and cooking up a good line to spin. We'd have to play those foot pedals like a concert pianist and dodge opposing vehicles while smokin' a stogie with a hamburger coke and fries, arguing with the wife, hushing the kids and just tryin' to get decent country on the radio. Then maybe our team might lose so anxious to get home and have to do it all again in the dark and rain! We were silver tongued multi skilled magicians of the road and anyone who drove slower was an idiot and anyone faster a maniac. That old rusted heap in the barn is a STINGER by golly and if I could I'd take it out and show y'all how it's done.

Now ya got me all worked up and that gets my heart a jittery and gives me gas.

The original post may not be that far off. Government agencies can and will (and always have) dictate whatever they want. Some California legislature guy is already introducing a bill where you will not be able to register a non electric car in California starting in 2040. Note this is not just saying you can't buy a new ICE car after that date, but that you can't register (drive) any non electric vehicle. This is only 23 years away. I don't think it will pass now, but if you think something like this will never happen, I think you have your head in the sand..

On one hand - this is very funny! :p On the other - it's not all that far from reality! :D

There are two different stories going on here. The "electric" story I'm sure will happen soon. That doesn't bother me. Give me a P100D and I'm perfectly happy with performance. They'll all be extremely fast soon. Who cares? Not me. As long as I have my power, I'll be fine. I like the power of a fast car. There's no fun in filling up at the gas station. Not putting gas in means the good ole days are behind us?

The other story is one of fully automated automobiles - without the capability of steering. That I don't buy. At all. Not any time soon. And I'm not interested in debating it. :) So carry on amongst yourselves. :D

I fear for the future and this banning seems to be a band wagon every govt is jumping on and since ICE cars will never die unless killed off by legislation this is precisely what is happening -

Britain

They didn't have to legislate the horse and cart out of existence people chose cars 'cause they were better. Electric is not better only different and shifts the pollution from fuel burning to power stations, battery manufacture and mining of cobalt and lithium not to mention toxic waste.

Me - I'm just a die hard petrol head so don't listen but consider the Indy 500 and Daytona and formula 1 with electric. I'd rather play with my train set, also electric.

I dunno, those Formula E cars are pretty cool, and Indy and Daytona tracks are so simplistic I'd be fine if they just electrified the tracks themselves and the drivers just stood in the pits with one of those plastic yellow guns controlling the speed. Add in some loops.

I don't resist electric cars. In fact, I would have gone electric if the infrastructure is already here. Unfortunately, we have to wait a couple more years where I am. I also believe the Stinger may be my last ICE purchase (at least for practicality, daily-commuter) before the market shifts to electric.

Doesn't mean people cant drive ICE for 'pleasure' and 'fun' just like the good old days! Horses were the primary means of transport, people raced horses back then - people ride and race horses now also, but for pleasure not out of necessity. ICE cars may become the same once electric cars become more mainstream. And I can't wait to own an electric car.

Also, I don't believe batteries (at least what we have currently) is the way to go, electric cars, yes! But not via batteries (at least not lithium ion stuff we have now).

Right. The point is, the "good ole days" isn't about standing at the gas pump and filling your car. It's the enjoyment of driving - and I don't see how that's going away because of electrified automobiles. It seems it's more than possible that we'll actually be able to go even faster because of the electrification of automobiles. The whole "Oh my God, they're taking steering wheels away" idea is not something we need to worry about any time soon - no matter how much Ford wants to talk about it...
