Back in 2019 I traded in my 2011 Subaru STI Hatch and bought a 2019 SWP GT2 AWD Stinger. To me the Stinger was the spiritual successor to the STI Hatch. An upgrade in every way, and way more comfortable daily driver and long haul cruiser. I leveraged the massive $9400 kia lease incentive, then I immediately bought out the lease with a conventional auto loan.

Lately I've been finding myself doing more and more outdoors type stuff which involves travelling up rocky forest roads. The Stinger can do it, barely, but it definitely isn't happy about it. I've been wishing for a long time that Kia would make something like a Sorento with the stinger drivetrain.

The recent crowdstrike stock market panic caused a couple of my trailing orders to trigger so I ended up with a bunch of unexpected money in my account. I've been thinking about moving on from the Stinger for a while and this finalized the decision. So I did a ton of research on the current market offerings. The criteria was: SUV, HUD, 360 camera, ground clearance, and I didn't want to feel like I was giving up anything from the Stinger.

I did a bunch of test drives and let's just say I was rather suprised with what I ended up with:

I was not expecting to own a BMW in my lifetime, ever. Last time I looked at BMWs was in 2011 and I was not impressed at all. The cars felt sterile and cramped inside, and idrive was a complete disaster. The cars drove well but utter lack of interior convenience features and user ergonomics they were absolutely awful. Turns out BMW has massively changed since then. They have fixed all the usability issues I had with their earlier designs and they now feel like normal vehicles inside.

The m40i checks all the boxes I was looking for and completely nails the comfort and performance. Just about everything feels like an upgrade from the Stinger. It really is the vehicle I wish Kia had made.

For comparsion, the old stinger, and the 2011 STI Hatch that the Stinger replaced:

Nice! The m40i is a quick little SUV, probably feels just as fast as the Stinger I bet. Hows the handling in comparison to the Stinger?

No surprises there, anyone who thinks BMWs aren't good cars is clueless. Don

Couple more horsepower, only a couple hundred pounds heavier...better throw a tune on there to make sure you don't miss the Stinger.

Nice history there, looks like you found the new ride that checked all the boxes. Love BMWs, not as much after the warranty's up though. Had a 740 Li that would have req'd a second job to keep road worthy out of warranty, but damn it was nice when all was well :)

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Nice! The m40i is a quick little SUV, probably feels just as fast as the Stinger I bet. Hows the handling in comparison to the Stinger?

it's way faster than the stinger. bmw claims 382hp and 4.4 sec 0-60, the general consensus is bmw is underrating it. reviewers are getting 4.1-4.2 sec, people are dyno'ing stock x3 m40i at almost 400hp to the wheels. it feels that fast for sure.

the suspension is slightly stiffer than the stinger's but also way more planted. my stinger was a bit bouncy and it was easy to unsettle the suspension. the x3 is extremely quiet and comfortable, even with the oem runflats. handling is way better, though there is very little steering feel. steering is very quick, just like the stinger. most other SUVs I drove have the steering ratio of a bus, including the bmw x5. the x3 doesn't feel like an SUV, it feels like a sports car, which is utterly bonkers.

everything in the x3 is incredibly refined. it has an amazing engine and the transmission is incredibly well programmed. everything is just seamless. in "comfort" mode it feels like my stinger in sport mode, except even more responsive. there's no lag, power is instantaneous, and delivery is totally smooth. the engine has a great sound. when i first test drove an x3 m40i i immediately understood what all the hype is about with the b58 engine.

there are a couple things the stinger has better than the x3 m40i, but overall the x3 m40i is a massive upgrade from the stinger.

Edited to add; BMWs are well engineered cars but it seems they're high maintenance
