G-912002

2018 GT1-98,000 miles. Last two days when starting a message popped up to push the brake pedal. Obviously, I was, but it cycled through various messages then starts. Pedal feels like it has been pumped up and has zero give until it starts.

Sounds like my issue a year ago and more. 2019 Premium, three times in over half a year it had the stiff brake pedal and wouldn't start. We didn't see any message. We got it to start each time after trying different things, the only consistent thing being removal of the key fob from the car and moving away from the car. Don't know if that had anything to do with it finally starting or just coincidence. Anyway, the third non-starting episode was only two weeks after the second episode, which had been almost exactly half a year after the first episode. This was turning into a real looming problem and took the car in for evaluation. Dealer ended up doing some reflash/resetting protocol of the systems involved in starting - KIA tech told them what to do. Everything has been fine for c. a year.

Problem sounds like you are not pressing on the brake pedal far enough to trigger the solenoid switch, which is used for turning on the brake lights and to interlock with the starter solenoid. The pedal might seem too stiff to step on it, but you should still be able to press it hard enough to trigger the brake switch.

If you have not flushed the old brake fluid out in a long time (or ever), I would highly suggest you start with that.

I had to replace my brake booster because the accumulated vacuum was dissipating after 4 hours or so. there was an air leak in it. Brake pedal was hard when I would press to start the car.
