Social media rant

If you're planning on staying put for at least a few more years you might consider Google Fiber. The last place I lived didn't have it but they let me put in a request for it and about six months later they they were finally able to install it at my place.
Google fiber is only in very select areas, you just happened to be in a city that had it (or a city they had pre-planned expansion into). Look at their coverage map, including webpass service, they are only in 21 cities across the entire US.

Google fiber will likely never be an ISP available to cities with less than 250k people because the cost of entry is just so high.
Never mind the fact that often times, it is the other ISPs who own the poles and/or underground passage-ways for running fiber, and they are not going to sell space to a competitor for anything remotely realistic.
So between competing ISPs and city council politics, there are many locations that they can't even deploy into even if they wanted to.

Gigabit has been sufficient for needs here. If I have to move large quantity of data to the file server I'll just run a cable between the two end points to get 2.5 gbps (both boxes have rtl8125's), otherwise, holding out for 10gbps as the next real upgrade. Prices too high right now, also such devices draw much more power.
Unfortunately Netgear discontinued the mixed speed switch I got a couple years back. It was a semi-managed 10 port switch 2x 10gbps, 2x 5, 2x 2.5, and 4x 1gbps for like $300.
That plus another 24 port switch (with poe for my cameras) takes care of my needs.
