Hey everyone. This is probably a very basic question for all you car guys/girls out there but I don't know the answer so I'm gonna ask it. I was reading in one of the other posts that said the OEM plugs are gapped to .038 and some as high as .40. From what I gather this is not ideal. What benefits/downsides would be possible if I regapped them down to say .024-.025? I read a few posts that said their stock car runs better now that they regapped them although they really didn't specify how the car runs better. I don't have a JB4 (although it may be in my future) but would the dealer automatically assume that I do thus causing potential warranty issues? Just wondering if this is something worth looking into. Thanks all

My OEM plugs were .033 and the car ran fine. Paul@K8 Stinger store wrote that on a stock engine colder plugs will foul, so they do not recommend running the upgraded plugs without a tune or chip installed.

Dealer has to prove your change was the cause of the failure (Magnuson-Moss).

Cheers

My OEM plugs were poorly gapped between .032”-.036” and caused me misfires when I was completely stock. Gaps that are too large make the coils work extra hard to produce a strong spark which can cause inconsistency in combustion. Regapping your OEM plugs to .024-.026 will make the coils more efficient and typically provide smoother power delivery and better reliability.

The dealership would have no way of knowing what the gaps were set at originally so they wouldn’t know if they were regapped anyway. Second, they would have no reason to, or want to pay for the labor to pull plugs unless a CEL caused them to do so. Aftermarket plugs(1-2steps colder) could give them reason to believe you modified your car in some way, but as others said the dealer would have to prove the new plugs caused the failure of the part they would consider denying under the warranty.

Kia actually replaced all my plugs for me free of charge because they didn’t know what was causing my hesitation & misfires in the first place. That’s how I found out about the inconsistent & large plug gaps and it finally made sense why so many people had issues and blown plugs, even when completely stock.
