For quite a number of years Subarus occupied the second stall in our garage (at one point we were both driving one). That's been our experience as well. Our last Subaru was an Impreza with a CVT, and the control module on the CVT died just before the warranty expired (had to be towed). Other little things needed addressing on that car. While a great drivetrain for the snow, they're otherwise nothing special anymore. Back when turbo cars were less common, it meant something. Now the few performance minded trims are even a bit slow by today's standards. We literally don't even think about Subarus anymore if discussing a new car.
i'm not a fanboi, but if i like a car and it works for me, i'll tend to stay with the brand. the final straw with Subaru was when my wife's gently driven, unmodded Forester XT's engine died at 71k. i meticulously maintained that car, and it really pissed me off because it still looked like a brand new car, but was basically a paper weight because replacing the engine would have been almost what the car was worth.
@Landshark the FXT seems like it would have been a perfect STi swap candidate...but that is frustrating that it blew with such low miles. 2004, I assume?
2005. its was my wife's ... rarely ever saw much boost LOL. an STi engine would have been a bit much for her leisurely driving. considered a N/A Forester afterwards, but they had grown to bloated proportions by then, and she liked the small, easy-to-drive size of her 2005. plus the bad taste the FXT left in my mouth, decided i was done with Subaru at that point ...
