Reasonable or not?

As I told you guys I gave up getting my maintenance at the stealer so after my successful oil change next I want to get the spark plugs replaced cuz they are wear and tear items right?
I have no mechanic training at all, I have the tools but those who have done the job how realistically is for a idiot like me be able to successfully do this job? I can pay 10 of these procedures but I just don't trust the dealer any more.

How many miles do you have and are you running an ecu tune or piggy back?

Youtube has a ton of really good videos explaining it and what tools you need.

My Gt2 has about 38k miles and I have no mods at all. Just want to keep the car running well until it dies.

Aside from access, biggest trick with plugs is to get 'em properly torqued. Not over torqued, but not loose either. You can use a torque wrench for the accessible ones, but some are difficult to get at (esp those closer to the firewall).

That said, i've not done plugs for a long time. My z28 (4th gen) was the last car. Several were a bitch and a half... and there were 8 of them. I just did the plug on my little toro snow blower (100cc? single piston 2 cycle). I used the gutentight torque method.

Last time I did mine (probably do it again some time this spring, before the track opens again) I did the remove intake method, gives you easy access to all the plugs. Wasn't too bad, just keep track of all the nuts/bolts and for god's sake, don't drop any.
The other method requires a number of extensions of different lengths and some u-joints or wobbles. Check the do-it-yourself forum.
 
There's one or two plugs that are hard to get to, I think a socket extension and swivel are needed otherwise you have to take somethings apart to get a clean shot. That said, it's a while until I need to do mine but expect to do this maintenance myself when time comes. I generally don't do a lot under the hood but have done plugs on several vehicles over the years. Although I have a cheap harbor freight torque wrench, it's not calibrated and until owning this recently, I just used JSolo's 'gutentight' method. I use the torque wrench as a ballpark.

I recall seeing a youtube video for oil changes and another for plug swapping on the 3.3TT engine. Might want to check youtube as well.
 
My advice is to use antiseize on the plugs. Makes it easier for next time, and I'd only wish the task of using an extractor on a broken spark plug on a handful of people.

Generally speaking, they should not need replacing unless they go bad, it isn't normal for them to fail.
Having said that, having a couple spares can't hurt just in case.
 
I've changed my plugs twice now (about 65,000 miles on the car)and they definitely needed in the second time. I've been running a tune for about half that mileage.

I'm far from a trained mechanic and haven't removed the intake on either occasion and have generally followed what is outlined in the is video.


In my opinion, the key is to have plenty of swivel attachments & extensions of varying lengths for your socket set A swiveling spark plug socket similar to this is also pretty much a necessity for the plugs on the passenger side.


All done, it probably takes me a little over an hour. Of that 2/3 - 3/4 of the time is spent on the passenger side plugs.

6 inch or 10inch. Still need to do mine.

Watch a few videos then apply the a$$hole theory, “If that A$$hole can do it, so can I”. Take your time, you will be fine. :thumbup:
