Just got my roof/A pillars/drip rails/shark fin wrapped ... they used 3M vinyl, and I asked for "gloss black". Looking at it, though, it's more of a semi-gloss (bordering on eggshell), and is nowhere near as glossy as the black areas of the roof that came painted from the factory. Before I contact the company who did this, I just want to be sure I'm not expecting too much out of "gloss black vinyl". So, anyone who's had their roof wrapped - is your black vinyl as glossy as the black painted areas? Is this 'semi-gloss' as good as it gets?

Also, I know I can ceramic coat over the vinyl, but has anyone used polish on it? I'd check with the experts before attempting, just wondering if anyone has already done it?

TIA for your feedback!

I have 3m gloss black on mine , vinyl has a bit of "orange peel " which may give it a "duller effect " BUT they may used Satin instead of gloss ??? I used a sealer and wax on mine and it has held up well . You should go back and get them to show you the vinyl they used and see if its correct . Good Luck

Yes, that's a good description - it has a slight 'orange peel' finish. I mean, it has some shine to it, no doubt. Just not incredibly glossy. Thanks for your input!

where did you get your roof wrapped? I’m looking for places around Ontario.

Vivid had the least amount of orange peel.

I used a place here in London called “Xtreme Graphix & Auto Trim”. They use 3M and Avery films, mine was done with 3M. Not a lot of choice in this area, and some were still closed due to the lockdown.

I have the 3M Gloss Black. I personally have never seen a vinyl that can truly emulate the appearance of a paint (at least on cars), it comes close, but there is always a contrast.

On that note, I have been very pleased with the 3M overall. As far as maintaining it goes, I use an orbital buffer with ceramic wax and a Meguiars polish when the luster fades. Just make sure you do not apply these products on the vinyl after its been baking in the sun.

Notice in the pics how the appearance of the vinyl looks duller in contrast, based on the angle while viewed.

I'm looking to do the same on my white Stinger. How did they get the strip of rubber on the roof? I went to a couple of places and they said they can plastic dip the rubber part.
they removed the 2 strips and wrapped them and re installed , the black rubber edges are still exposed , but its just a nice contrast and looks fine .............I wouldn't reco dipping

How long would this wrap last you would say? I have a white Stinger as well and have been toying with the idea of a black wrap (carbon-wrap) for the hood and/or roof...

its been over 3 yrs for me , looks great , car is is kept in a garage or carport though ,

3M and Avery vinyl are too thin. I can say this because I've used their products.

What you want is either SunTek Altered Black or STEK DYNOblack PPF. Both are thick enough to not have the orange peel look and thus reflect the light to appear shiny. The shop I used for my ceramic coating and clear PPF uses SunTek, so that's what I got. It costs a bit more, but you pay for quality.

I had my antenna and roof moulding/rails painted, it cost a whopping $90.
