Hello all,

I need some help learning what to look for when reading logs. Can someone point me in the direction to a post or a video of someone explaining what to look for when reading logs?

At the very least, would someone be so kind as to tell me if my logs look safe to run?

mods: BMS intakes, bov, snorkels, HKS plugs gapped to .022, ewg wires, 93octane, map 3.

Many thanks for considering my request!

Here's a breakdown I did on how I look at them, as an amateur who's still learning. It has a link to BMS' guidelines for each parameter, and it would probably be a good idea to post on the JB4tech forums:

That said, I put some opinions of your log below. I always thought map 1 was for 91, map 2 for 93, and maps 3-4 for E30, and would guess that map 3 + 93 is why you're getting timing pulls. Maybe try again with 4 gallons of E85 in the tank? Anyway here's how I look at it:

- Identify portion of log where Pedal = 100, then use RPM and Gear (orange) to know where shifts are happening (rows ~110, ~120, and ~145), because some variables like timing spike/plunge there and should be ignored.
- Boost (blue) shows a max around 20psi, 6 over the stock 14 that ECU sees.
- FP_H, Trims, and AFR are next (dark green). First two show normal values (10 for fuel pressure, 40s at peak torque and 25ish at upper rpm for trim), but AFR is showing some weird spikes from the expected ~12:1. I don't see boost spikes or fuel pressure drops...maybe shift-related surges? BOV issue?
- Ign_1 and Ign_2-6 are next (yellow). Rule of thumb is drops of 3+ in Ign_1, or values >3 in 2-5 (that's the drop relative to cyl 1) are corrections due to knock. So cyl 3 is making big corrections, my guess is due to 93 octane on map 3, but @Terry@BMS might have more context in light of the AFR.

thank you very much for the explanation! I now know what to look for. There isn't any e85 in my area. I'll try doing a log in map 2 in an hour or so and see what happens.

those spike in AFR is weird as well as that cylinder 3 is pulling timing. If cylinder 3 is still pulling timing in map2 should I double-check the gap in the plugs?

Not sure, like I said I'm new to this platform, so I'd err conservative and assume that you're running into octane limit on 93 + map 3, which map 2 (or an octane boost on 3) should fix. But maybe the BMS guys will see something more in the logs if you post on JB4tech (if so, update here too so others can learn).

Spark plug gap tends to be more about misfiring / not having a strong enough spark under high boost, so if it's still pulling timing on map 2, I'd back it down to map 1, try a different gas station, and check with BMS.

ok so i did a few pulls in map2. the AFR isn't jumping outside of shifts. but cylinder 3 is still reading a bit high, 3.8. I'm going to post in the JB4tech forums and see what they say over there and ill report back here. See attached log.

Looks pretty good, the cyl 3 isn't ideal but isn't terrible.
Before checking the plug, try resetting the ECU. Just disconnect the ground terminal of the battery for a few minutes. Sometimes this helps when you get some timing pulls.

Haha. I literally just finished reconnecting the negative terminal after waiting 15min. I’ll have to take some pulls a little later tonight or tomorrow. I’ll report back

Yeah this seems to reaffirm that you're just at the limits of your octane, but wouldn't hurt to get BMS's opinion, especially with that weird AFR spiking on map 3. Map 2 looks like you're just right around the max 93 will support.

ok so I disconnected the negative terminal for 15min and took another pull. it appears things have cleaned up. IGN are all 0's.
Can someone please take a look and let me know what they think about the rest?

thanks!

Amazing how that works. :D

Looks good. Only suggestion would be to update the jb4 firmware, you are on 25 and the latest is 28.
Now time to mix in some E85 to get E30 and try map 4.

I mixed e85 to get e30. Things don't look so good on my long pull up to 100mph. IGN3 adjusting to 4.5. I am disconnecting my negative terminal again to see what it does. If the timing adjustments are bad again, Ill disconnect the battery again and see what map 3 does for me. I tested the e85 I bought it its e80. I also get my 93 from circle k. maybe the 93 I buy is junk. I really wish cylinder 3 wasn't the one tucked away under the intake manifold. Maybe this weekend I'll pull the plug and verify its gap. I may also swap that ignition coil and spark plug with an easier to get to cylinder, like cylinder 2. This way if cylinder 2 starts pulling timing after the swap, then I know to replace that plug.

Your first two pulls in that log looked good, so maybe ign3 was a fluke that will go away. Can't hurt to check the plug gap and coil, but I would think issues there would cause a miss vs. timing pull...have you asked the BMS guys on jb4tech?

Also, if you're manually running logs you may want to just use the JB4 auto-log setting (triggers when pedal >70/80%), that way you won't have all those extra off-throttle rows to scroll through.

thanks for your response! I checked the gaps and moved some plugs around. More detail is explained in the JB4 forum. Here’s the link to the discussion: just make sure to put “www” in front of it when copying it into your url. I’m too new of a member to post links.
