Hey all,

I'm getting quotes for PPF for my micro blue GT2. Normally I think this would be straightforward, but I'm having second thoughts. Specifically, if there were to be a problem with the paint down the road, I doubt Kia would cover me for any of the PPF costs ($1500+). On the other hand, the PPF has to help and the covered parts would likely not chip or peel, especially if I go full hood coverage.

Thoughts?

I'm in the same boat. Not sure what to do in this situation. I just changed all the badges and had absolutely no issues with the paint. I think my car was painted/manufactured after the paint problems were dealt with. Hopefully.

Does anyone have any advice for this problem?

If you get PPF and then have paint problems, Kia MAY pay for it to be replaced. Any special requests like that are case-by-case and require customer relations approval.

A basic PPF kit is marketed by Kia as an accessory so why not get the dealer to fit plus whatever other areas you want. There shouldn't be any argument in the event of a paint issue.

Kia is paying for my chiping finally (Blue) but required i get PPF after the respray. If you get chipping they may not pay at all so be safe and get the PPF ASAP!

The sticker inside the driver door shows a date of 1/18. Is that the build date for the car?

I was recently quoted $2900 for full frontal as well as rocker panels and behind the door handles. I think I need to shop around some more, although they have a good reputation locally.

Anyone know of someone in the St. Louis area?

I got full frontal PPF after a few months. The road damage was minimal yet the writing was on the wall. After touching up the last nicks I had it done. Great decision! All angst about road debris impacting my car has been knocked back to the lowest level possible. Nothing stays perfect. But there is no reason to invite imperfections any faster than necessary.

Vis-a-vis Stinger paint issues: if your can exhibits none, then good to go. If you have evidence of slight adhesion issues, very small and few in number, now is the time to touch up and PPF, imho. Later, years down the road literally, the PPF will need replacing. When it comes off, probably there will be some paint damage if your car is one of those that does have adhesion issues. The cases are variable as to severity. No sense borrowing trouble with this. If the car is to be sold, take the hit for paint issues. It won't be huge. By then, the new owner will probably want to repaint it anyway. If you unload the car with good PPF still on it, then this entire topic is moot.

Yes it is.

There is no "after the paint problems were dealt with". @Abaloz (a recent purchaser of a Red) has a build date of 5/18 and he has missing paint inside his hatch lid just inside the edges. So if this is paint flaking/chipping, it is from a car made as late as the MY18s go. There could be other reasons why he is missing paint there. His hood badge swap caused paint crazing around it too; but that could be caused by the cleaner that he used. Anyway, there are cases (very few so far) of paint issues after early 2018.

Hey, another one of us in Seattle! Is your dealer helping at all?

I would love to understand the common factors between those who have paint issues; climate, build date, color, usage behaviors. Either that or it's something we're all going to experience, just a question of timing and severity.

I skipped the dealer as much as possible since they don't
make the call in paint issues.
2017 builds were chippy, Jan 2018 chippy and peely. Cars after that are peely. Hope they learn how to paint for 2019.

Makes sense

It doesn't make sense to me. I don't recall Kia or Hyundai having any notable mass paint issues in the recent past. To me, that says there was a change in materials, process or quality. The headlight thread had a peel that looked to be about 3 or so inches in length, absolutely absurd to me. I'm getting the dealer to look at my couple paint defect spots to have it well noted in case it spreads, but it's definitely concerning. I can understand paint chipping easily, that's been a pretty common thing since manufacturers moved to more eco friendly paints and reduced the amount of layers since the old days of seven layer thick Cadillac paint. This adhesion issue boggles my mind and does concern me, but I bought the car anyway...lol.

PPF is great...had min installed immediately after purchase. Full frontal minus A pillars was approx $2k with suntek ultra. All the shops in my area use either suntek or expel and many think that the 3M stuff has gone down in quality over the past few years. They gouge us a bit in AZ for PPF since the roads are so bad so hopefully you can find a full frontal for a bit cheaper.

Mine is most likely being returned so am half tempted to peel off the PPF and see if any yellow paint comes with it!

Worse temptation than picking off a scab! :P

I did xpel ultimate full frontal, and doing rockers shortly. It's the best thing you can for the paint issues on these cars. I measured 3mils in some places. The paint is just so thin that PPF or may a re-clear is the only way for you to stop chipping. When if come time for replacement, if you use steam and stretch methods, it should come off without damage

The dealer wanted $1300 (CAD) to do the the first 1/3 of the hood, front fenders and full bumper including all the black chrome trim, headlights and A pillars, which I turned down. I drove the car for 2 months without picking up any chips or paint damage, before arranging for somebody locally with a mobile service to do the same as the dealer - minus the A pillars, but adding the mirrors, and door handle pockets. I had no interest in doing the whole hood as I've had film on previous cars, and in my experience that's not an area that gets much in the way of impacts.

The cost ended up less than half of that from the dealer, done in my garage using Xpel film, and she was quite experienced. In fact she used to do PPF for the dealers as well, and I was able to check her references prior to contracting her services. She took several hours to apply everything, working steadily - there are a LOT of pieces for the black chrome trim, etc.. 3 months later and the application is still flawless - no bubbles, unwrapped edges, or misaligned pieces. You've really got to look hard to locate the film edge across the hood.

As Calgary has a lot of road gravel to contend with in the Spring before the streets are swept, I considered this money very well spent.
