According to owners manual for my 2018 GT1, the engine oil capacity is 7.29 quarts. When I bought the car I noticed the dipstick showed overfilled with the oil level being quarter inch above the top fill line.

When I drained the oil I got exactly 7 quarts out of it.

When I refilled it took 6.5 quarts to get it almost to the fill line. Yes, I did change the filter and I did let the pan and filter both drain for quite a while, was not a rush job.

Anyone have similar experience or know why this is? Is there 3/4 of a quart of oil that just doesn't come out...or something?

7.29 is probably the "dry" capacity, but you'll never get the engine/turbos/radiator fully drained.

I'm at 77K and change my oil every 5K and it always takes around 6.5 to fill.

I've always found that my car only will take about 6 quarts to get to the full line after its been drained. Maybe its to take into account the fact that kia knows some of these cars burn a bit of oil? I know my first motor burned like half a quart off when I was running 5W-30 in it but my current motor doesn't burn any when I use 5W-40

As far as the dipstick showing overfilled, the oil change service procedure pdf basically stated to check when hot. Which leaves some oil in nooks / crannies . Not fully in the pan. I can’t find it but it was posted on the oil change thread.

As far as extraction. The above posts were right.

But… the first time I used an actual tube down extractor… I shit you not I pulled almost 8 quarts. Mine was absolutely overfilled by Kia rocket scientists.

That is weird. It always takes me over 7 quarts to fill it.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Thanks Everyone! I appreciate the responses. Will plan on ~6.5 quarts going forward.
