New here. Currently own a 2017 Chevy SS

Hey folks as you can tell I'm new here. I currently own a 17 SS. I bought it this past November. It's been a dream car of mine for a few years. V8 and 4 door (gotta have 4 door), I checked out the Charger 392 and while I liked it I just couldn't get past my bad experience with Dodge.

I have despised KIA and Hyundai for a many years now. All my car buddies know me as the guy that hates these brands. However I decided on one weekday when I had nothing to do to go check the new Stinger out. Of course I opted to test drive the AWD GT1. Told the salesman "you know I'm going to be hard on this thing right?" " he replied with "that's fine man, just don't crash".

So I'll start from the beginning, the car from the exterior doesn't look half bad. The rear reflectors are meh to me but I guess if you get black or red it's ok. As I entered the vehicle I was expecting cheap feels. Definitely not the case. Everything felt solid. Needless to say so far I was impressed. The "tablet" in the center was much more than what I had in my SS. But everything else felt fairly normalish. Now off to driving, we left the dealership parking lot and took off, I mean literally took off. The car for all it's v6 twin turbo glory really surprised me. Stopped at the light and I did a brake boosted launch. Man that was alot of fun, no traction issues. She just went.

Overall I was fairly impressed, I may get one as a daily, but the only thing that's stuck in the back of my mind is

1 this is first generation stinger, what kind of problems will they have?

2 what will the resale value be in 5 years? Will it tank like many other KIA products? Or will it hold value?

All in all I was impressed and it has definitely changed my outlook on the entire KIA brand.

I don't think anyone is expecting Stingers to retain a whole lot of resale value. Depreciation will be a factor. Of course when the SS was available I saw dealers dropping 10k off the price, so I'm not sure how well they're doing either. My solution is just to keep cars for 10+ years.

Agreed. I'd rather pick the right car to keep for 10 years, paid off after 5 and free for the next 5, than have neverending payments. I pretty sure I'm still seeing some 2008 Kias running around.

Welcome to the hive. I have a number of things that I disagree with. First, I owned a 1998 impala ss that I loved. Lots of modifications, fast, comfortable, but, it was based on, what we used in NY, a taxi and a police car. Interior was blah, cheap and easy to destroy. When the new ss's came out, they also looked blah. Nothing really to stand out. A scoop, some vents, that's it. So, you asking about resale value, have you checked the resale on your car? Is it any wonder it was discontinued? Was it fast? Yes. Was it striking to look at? No. Not being disrespectful of your car, I love my Chevy's, and matter of fact, all vehicles. But, being that the stinger is first year, it will have it's problems. Resale value, we will wait and see. If you are the type of person to buy a car for it's resale value, you should purchase a classic and just look at it. People don't buy an m5 and expect it to be a million dollar classic 30 yrs from now. They make too many of them, that's why the first ones are sought after. Factor in that the yellow stinger are limited to 400, that could be construed as instant classic, but I want to drive my car. We have our classics in the garage. Wiped down with a baby diaper, this is for fun. Do I foresee it not having any issues? No, it's a twin turbo. It's awd. It has too many electronics to not have a gremlin or three. Also, look at the big three of the Japanese cars. They came here, made cheap, inexpensive cars. Waited 10-15 yes then hit us with Acura, infinity and Lexus. That's what Hyundai and kia did. I applaud them for stepping out of the box. It's all up to your opinion, you like the stinger, cool, you buy something else, still cool. Either way, you win by purchasing a car that makes you laugh and smile. We, as a forum, welcome you and your opinion as an intelligent adult. Ok, I have fallen off my soapbox

Welcome to the forum. There is a lot of great info and helpful people on here.

Congrats on your SS. I think it’s a very nice car and basically a American M5. It will probably be one of the last true NA V8 sport sedans available in the next decade. I actually considered the SS & Charger 392 Scat Pack before I decided on the RWD Stinger GT2. I too wanted a powerful V8 4 door sedan, but in the end the Stinger just had so many advantages I couldn’t pass up the deal. And I’m sooo glad I did! But I digress...

I’m glad to see more people opening their minds about KIA and the Stinger. KIA is not the same company or make the same cars the used to 10 years ago. Badge aside, the Stinger is now direct competition for Porche Panamera, BMW 640 GranCoupe, Audi A7/S7 and other cars double it’s price.

As for the exterior appearance I personally think it’s exquisite. Ive even had people ask me if it was a Maserati and Aston Martin!

I agree the interior is top notch and on par with some top luxury brands, especially with the Light Gray Nappa Leather.

Every aspect of the performance is surely surprising and puts a smile on my face every time I hit the gas. It’s more than expected and I can easily hang with SS, 5.0 stangs, and SRTs all day long!

You are correct and the first year of any new models reliability is in question. However, Kia has been repeatedly one of the top brands in JD Power Initial quality studies and overall reliability for past few years. And my 2014 Optima SXL had 0 issue the 4yrs I had it, so I have 0 worries about any problems. Not to mention it still has a 10yr/100k mile warranty for peace of mind.

I think the resale should actually be pretty good due to how quick the word is getting out. I already know a handful of people that, like yourself, have completely changed their minds about Kia and are considering the Stinger themselves. If this trend continues it could turn into another sought after specialty car that doubles in price over its lifetime. Don’t forget it happened to Vipers, NSXs, and Supras. Now they are collectors cars and many wish they could have owned the original.

It’s truly an amazing vehicle and I will admit I’m more and impressed with it every single day. Hope you join the Stinger “HIVE” too and happy motoring!
