Hello!

I've been posting elsewhere for about a month here but figured I should make a proper intro thread.

Recently picked up a 22 gt-line in ceramic silver. It was a long car buying process - 2 years in the making.

Two years ago due to family reasons I had to sell my g37s (6mt). It was a great car with excellent driving dynamics and plenty of performance. Unfortunately it was small inside and got poor mpg compared to the other car in the household, a 9th gen accord exl 2.4L NA (cvt). The accord had lots of room inside, a large trunk, and sipped fuel (upwards of mid 20's in the city and 35-40 on the highway). It was a wonderful transportation appliance, but not much else. With performance tires (michelin as 3+) the cornering was much improved and confidence inspiring but the suspension and engine couldn't keep up.

Thought I wanted an suv so test drove a bunch including an rdx, cx5, rx350, rav4 and some others. Ultimately realized they're too tall, too heavy and corner like trucks. In fact, almost made a deal on a rdx but walked out because we were about $1K apart in the pricing and I didn't feel the right vibe in that car.

My kia experience started a decade ago with an optima sx that lasted about 3 months before I got rid of it. That car would not drive straight requiring small constant corrections to stay 'on center'. After too many visits to the dealership inc alignments, rotations, toe bolts, wheel swaps, etc, time to call it quits. Ordered the G37 instead. Swore I'd never buy another kia/hyundai ever again.

Ever since the stinger came out in '18 it was on my radar but due to the above not a real consideration. Performance was part of the appear as well as the larger cargo space. Have a thing for wagons/hatchbacks. A major con was first model year bugs. For my main use, the 6 cyl was overkill and 4 cyl too weak. Not to mention even poorer mpg (for 6 cyl ver) than the G. I was keeping my eyes open for options. Plan was to also sell the accord and combine profits into a single new car.

Not to long ago I was test driving the sonata nline and was impressed with the engine/trans performance. That deal too fell through, ~$500 or $750 separating the sale - it was a marketing adjustment addon local dealers are charging that I refused to pay out of principle. Ride was a bit rough too (19" wheels). Good thing that deal fell through too.

When I got home I realized the kia version of the car better aligned with my preferences. Leather (fake?) seats, analog gauges, traditional shifter, nicer looking front end. Only problem was it was nowhere to be found in a color I wanted without the inflated pricing. I spent a few weeks trying to find one. Eventually discovered the same engine was now offered in the genesis g70, g80 and the stinger. The former is too small, same size roughly as the G inside, the middle is too pricey, which left the stinger.

Again same BS with the local dealers in terms of pricing. However, expanding the search radius yielded some dealers further away (but reasonable) that were offering below msrp (~$3K) pricing. Coupled this with the inflated appraisal from carmax made the deal worthwhile, albeit it was two completely separate transactions given dealer's trade value was thousands of dollars less than carmax.

I don't care much for aesthetic mods. So far first on the list is to get better tires. The re97as-02 really undermines this car. The accord cornered much better with those A/S tires than the stinger currently does. Maybe sway bars next year.

Sorry for the long rant. Figured it was might be helpful to give context to why I chose this.

Thank you for posting an official introduction. Welcome aboard! And congratulations on your brand new Stinger! :)

That was an entertaining story. You are officially welcomed. :P

Welcome to the hive (Officially ) Tires for sure, and after that I would look at doing sway bars

Awesome post bro, great read and congrats.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
Tires are scheduled for friday. Michelin PS AS4 in 245/40/18, ~$840 OTD from discount tire. I'll try to flip the stock ones on CL or FB or nextdoor. Fairly fresh to 2x21.

Here's a pic from the costco parking lot earlier this morning. Found a spot furthest away in the corner.

Good strategic parking. Only way to keep the Stinger safe. Welcome to the forum.

Just make sure that corner isn't downhill from the cart corrals.

Hahah. I'm used to parking way out in the middle of nowhere. Sometimes take up two spots but that usually invites some @sshole to park next to me. In this case it was shady under there too (too hot with 100% humidity). Coming from a 6mt I'd always pull through when parking so I don't have to back out. Less work and safer departures. I never understood why folks just 'pull in', even when the spot in front of them is clear.

New tires (PS AS 4 245/40/18) installed today. No fitment/clearance issues in the front.

Speedo error appears to be about the same as with the stock (re97as02 225/45/18). The garmin reads about 1 mph slower than car (speedometer, center cluster and gps). I will take it on the highway tomorrow to see how much error at higher speeds.

They got me in on time and out within an hour. Car was manually jacked, front sides then rear sides. They didn't have proper pucks (surprising), brought my own just in case. Aside from a mismatched valve cap all appears ok.

Haha... Timed it just right with an opportunity to pull over to snap the pic. Also got one at exactly 600mi.

Here was my early chance pic (I see "222" all over the place all the time):

This time a month ago I was hard at work trying to negotiate the deal on the car. Hard to believe so a month's gone by already.

I don't fall in love or get emotionally attached to vehicles, so can't claim to 'love' the car. But... I also don't hate it or have desire to get rid of it (like I did the optima a decade ago). So all is good. Power seems sufficient (esp on that last 500+ mi roadtrip involving lots of country roads).

No major mods other than tires. Minor mods include the tuxmats floor mats, mobius action cam (dashcam), running usb cables from the rear usb ports to power the camera and to a suction cup mount at the lower left corner of the windshield for garmin/phone.

I just picked up some 21mm 6 point deep sockets (strange I couldn't find any in my tools), and a 27mm for the oil filter.

Jacking up the car is a pain but doable with that HF cross beam (Steel Floor Jack Cross Beam). I use a hockey puck between the pad and pinchweld, otherwise they're too large.

MPG is respectable at around 23-24 around town and close to 30 or more on the hwy.

The only quibble so far is the seat belt height adjuster rattle on certain roads. One of these days i'll stuff something in there so it can't rattle.

After another week or so, just give us the goodies........still very anxious as to how the 2.5 moves the car? Not looking for a comparison to the 3.3 but more of how much better the 2.5 is vs. the 2.0

Most youtube stuff constantly reports on how the 2.5 is NOT the 3.3......well DUH!!!!!!

^^Hard to compare to a car I never drove. Previous car was a 9th gen accord 4cy/cvt and a '12 G37S sedan 6mt.

The accord had no power but reasonable handling (with good tires) for what it was.

The G had plenty of power with a 7500 rpm redline. Power came on much differently than with the 2.5T. At higher rpm and at a slower rate. Being a 6mt, it had the same gearing as a 370z (same ratios, longer drive shaft). At 80 mph I'd be well over 2500rpm, so downshifting wasn't really necessary to pass on the interstate. Country backroads, different story given the slower speeds. With the 2.5, I'm somewhere below 2K at 80 mph.

Overall, the car doesn't feel 'heavy' even though its a good #3850 with awd. Does it pin you in the seat, not quite. You should give one a test drive to form your own opinion. I always request a test drive on the highway for any car i'm seriously considering, and/or choose dealers near a highway or high speed road. Driving around the block or even several city blocks is a waste of time.

Mainly just curious as there is not much available on the performance of the 2.5T. Both the 2.5 and 3.3 were on my short list when I traded in my 2.0.

Back in the OP i referenced an optima I bought a decade ago.

Turns out that car was bought on the same date as the stinger was this year, 8/2! How bizarre is that?
