Hi all -

The driver's seat has a small tear that I noticed prior to sitting in the car when accepting it from the dealer. They are trying to get someone to mend it - I told them that since it was there prior to me taking receipt of the car, it needs to look new not mended. They are seeing if warranty will cover it - if not, it would need to be mended.

Do I stick to my guns and make them replace the seat regardless, let them fix it and accept some remuneration to make up the difference, not a big deal? Thoughts?

Spoke with the dealer, they are pushing a hard sell on getting it fixed. Said the upholstery guy has been there 30 years and he will make it great. Said there are only 4 of those seats in the entire country and it would take a week and a half to replace. And I wouldn't have the car in that time. She is definitely getting pushed to get out of this as cheaply as possible. Pretty disappointing after two positive buying experiences in a row from them.

Why do "honeymoons" always end? It's always something.

That tear is pretty gnarly looking. Any repair has to be completely invisible and just as tough as the rest of the upholstery.

I don't see any reason why you would be without your car whilst waiting for a new seat. Part arrives, take out old, fit new.....simple!

Exactly ! , my dealer had to replace a wheel , tire and steering wheel , when all the parts arrived , I took it in and it was all replaced in 2 hrs .............!

Exactly! Have them order a new seat and you will bring the car in when it arrives. You’re in the drivers seat now (literally and figuratively), not the Dealer!

Do not let them keep the car while it’s on order. That’s when they’ll repair the seat rather than replace it and tell you it’s new.

I would take a seat replacement as well ... what if he repairs it and it looks great now - fast forward a year later and the tear happens again, you are SOL my friend and I bet you they wont do anything about the warranty. Have them replaced order the seat, call you, come in and wait couple of hours to have this replaced.

I recommend you walk right now. Don’t take a repair or a new seat. I see this as an indication of how they will be to deal with on everything. Go find a different car somewhere else

What Are Your Rights WhenReturning A New Car? Underthe Consumer Rights Act, if the vehicle goes wrong withinthe first 30 days of ownership, you can simply reject for a full refund. If a fault develops after those 30 days but within thefirst six months, the dealer gets one chance to fix it.Jul 9, 2018
My husband is an attorney and he says if you have the warranty (which obviously you will have it) then you have every right to choose: Have it repaired or have it replaced!! Personally, I wouldn't care how long it took to get a new seat. Over time, that mend will be rubbed thin from sliding onto & off of the seat. Stick to your guns!

Mending is not going to work for the simple fact it is in the perforated portion of the seat. There is nowhere stable to anchor the thread and it will just tear again at the next perforation in line when the thread is stressed from movement.

Get the whole seat replaced. There is no reason for you not to have your car while the seat arrives at the dealer.
Also I echo what @MisterMac stated. Once the seat has been replaced, get your work/service done at a different dealer, this situation is a clear indication of how they will handle future problems, should they arise.

To finish this story out... I'm now sitting at the dealer. I sent the salesperson a link to a place that sells the seat covers, and said replacing the cover would be fine (and it would be, it's the seat cover that was defective, not the entire seat). They getting it taken care of with a new seat cover, plus two scratches in the paint they found. All's well that ends well.

Glad you're happy with the resolution. Cheers
