Coworker of mine just had his brand new (3 week old) pickup stolen out of his driveway in Toronto. Turns out there has been a rash of thefts in the area.

The news article states they had master keys. Is that actually a thing? Are manufacturers really that stupid? Or is this like a bump key sort of thing?

I'd think a $60-100K truck uses keyless entry and ignition, no?

With the right equipment those are probably easier to defeat than traditional mechanical keys.

I can confirm keyless ignition. That's why I wonder if there is some sort of device that can let a dealer in and start the vehicle without the fob.

^^^I have faraday bags. After a little while of use, they seem to not work near the car, i.e., you can walk up to the door with the fob in the closed faraday bag and still get the door to unlock. But, at night I put the fob in a faraday bag anyway, and it's on a desk as far away in the house as possible from the driveway: I doubt that a car thief could capture my fob's signature (the spare fob is wrapped in double foil, which I know positively renders the fob "invisible" even directly up against the car door).
