Lost both turbos during WOT

Merging onto the highway I hit WOT which was fine for a moment, then the rpms seemed strange and sorta bobbed / bucked around quickly by redline then lost what I figured was boost. Connect and logged to confirm there was no boost. I didn’t think there was any way BOTH turbos blew at the same time, pulled over shut er off and turned on again - turbos back and all seems normal although I’m not boosting as high anymore but need more runway to be able to validate that confidently.

Found an old post where it *may* have been firmware (a few years ago and they claimed it was fixed) but someone else resurrected the thread and reported it without resolve. I did update the firmware from 24 to 27, which in itself was no fun time either with a few problems but eventually got it. I’ll test again - and it is cool maybe 40 this morning, the car had cruising along slowly for a 4-5 min drive before WOT. No codes. I’ll upload the log which will support no boost then restart and boost again but my phone ain’t having it this early.

Thoughts?

Sounds like classic overboost.

Does the tune not regulate that? In every other turbo I’ve had, which is a long list, they’ve been tuned and at times have hit a limiter. They would maybe cut fuel or however it’s done but they wouldn’t cripple my turbos until I turned my car off and restarted

To clarify, it is likely not actually overboost, it is just an overboost condition set by the factory ECU programming, it is extremely conservative and apparently people with zero mods have experienced it, especially on the 22 & 23 model years.
I ended up solving it by just getting an ECU tune.

Doesn’t the jb4 bypass that and feed the ecu stock or expected values?

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
The EWG wires connect to the electronic wastegate under the turbos, they do not come in that kit, they are purchased separately.
If you get those, install them and adjust some settings in the JB4 app it will help with the overboost condition being set by the ECU. That said, I still ran into overboost issues after all was said and done, so I ended up getting a tuned ECU. Some of the programmed nannies from the factory are simply ridiculous, with the overboost conditions probably being the most ridiculous and inconvenient. I don't know what Kia changed other than the exhaust for the 22 & 23 years, but it's enough that it somehow made the programmed overboost conditions more easily set.

think you should change the thread title lol.

Makes it seem you blew both your turbos on wot

Well I lost them, I genuinely thought that was it she’s a goner into the shop but a quick restart and all good.

That’s the first time I’ve run into it. I’ll chalk it up to being a bit cool it’s the first time since I’ve had an issue with it…and I do a fair bit of spirited driving. I’ve ran wot several times since no issue.

Understandable, but the symptoms would probably be more severe in driving iirc.

Classic overboost is fairly common, especially during colder climate.

This exactly. This is the time of year where we'll start seeing an increase of "Lost boost...but it came back after I shut down and restarted" posts. In fact, it seems like we're already seeing a few.

Mine was so bad it even set fairly frequently in warm weather with the EWG wires and the FF about as low as it could reasonably be set. Only had intakes at the time. Seems like Kia made changes to the last couple model years and just assumed it would be fine instead of putting a couple test cars through it. I love the car and I think Kia/Hyundai is a decent company, but this particular situation is pretty ridiculous.

I’m just praying it doesn’t happen again I’ll wait a bit longer and go a bit easier…scary losing all my punch on a short merge as I’m passing by, or at least trying to until the turbos tap out

It's more likely to happen if you're pushing it a bit. It's not necessarily random, but it's not exactly predictable, either.
When it was happening to me I didn't let it hold me up too much, just be mindful of it, I reckon.
