This is the worst I have heard of in over half a century. The number of separate fires all at once makes me suspect arson. We have too many terrorist cells forming in this country from military age illegal aliens.

Is that a Stinger?

Have you ever experienced the Santa Ana winds? That's what is causing the spread, not arson. Been there during Santa Ana season and the winds are pretty intense. Embers from the fires get kicked up by the winds and carry to other unburned areas and land on what is basically tinder with how dry it has been there.

I get that. So the Palisades fire starts first yesterday, and the winds are blowing toward the Pacific, and the first fire starts fires to the east and north?

Actually I believe they started in the santa Monica mountains then moved to the Malibu / Palisades area from there

Downed power line, sparks and just the sheer lack of moisture in the undergrowth coupled with the winds

causes this mess. We have the same winds up here in western Washington a few times a year, but thankfully

we get a ton more rain so we don't see this. What really makes the difference is how the mountain passes and

the general terrain can dictate the direction of the winds as it is funneled thru those areas due to a pressure

difference between low and high pressure weather systems. Low on the coast and a high on the other side

of the Sierras. Embers can travel a long ways depending on the wind strength. Devastating.

Really. Throwing in some good old Trump Logic to who started the fire? And do you really thing those in the Palisades own a Stinger. Looks more like a Tesla Model Y.

The reporting has the Palisades fire as the first one. Besides, the wind direction is east to west, and the Santa Monica Mountains are downwind.

Ima not throwing names around. Are you saying that arson is ruled out? If so, why?
The feature of the burning car in the OP picture that makes me question "Stinger" is the shape of the RR taillight assembly cavity, which would suit the Tesla's taillight shape better. Your probably right. But are you denying that regular people living there would find the Stinger a fun, relatively inexpensive "beater" car?

You throw out arson, then military aged illegal aliens. Were you not trying to make an unsubstantiated connection? I'm not pulling out anything. The land is extremely dry making it prone to lightning, cigarette , campfire embers, open pit fires in the back yard, sparks, so on and so on. Not once did "military aged illegal aliens" ever cross my mind. Why don't we let the professionals figure out the root cause. And I'm not talking Trump and his idiot kid trying to link the war in Ukraine to the fire or others talking about DEI and not enough white people in the fire department. WTF!!

It is inarguably dry and the high winds this time of year make fires spread and harder to contain. If you know of another year when this many fires broke out almost simultaneously in LA, please share. I haven't heard of this level of fire threat in LA before. Henry Winkler just said, "there is an arsonist here in LA", and the police said "no reports of arson have been filed." But they are investigating for arson in Palisades. The arson fears are inevitable. Most wild fires start that way.

I mean, the videos I've been seeing are the "professionals" stating that their highest priorities were making their firefighting force less white, spending their time and budgets on pride events, and sending equipment overseas...

Do you think it's unreasonable to question those decisions and the people who made them as the hydrants run empty and the fire sits 0% contained?

Sitting here in a cold wintery Ontario makes me kind of glad to live where I do.
Yes our winters can be brutal, but compared to what I'm seeing on the news, a few inches of snow is nothing to complain about now.
We don't get fires, hurricanes, earthquakes, or tornadoes either. I feel for all the folks in California going through this right now. My thoughts are with them.

These tragedies bring out the worst in politics.

Arson is very low on the scale. It used to be the go to reason before people really worked out what went on.

It's more likely the electricity assets in weather causing the most problems. You get 100kmh (60mph) winds and power lines come down. Dry weather lightning is a huge cause. 10.000 lightning strikes come out of one storm.

In 2009 we had Black Saturday in Melbourne. 173 people dead, 450,000 hectares/1.1 MILLION acres burned 3,500 buildings destroyed including 2000 houses in outer suburban areas.

This was a result of a 10 year drought. high temperatures (above 45C/115F, 5% humidity and 120kmh (70mph winds) on one day.

You don't buy enough emergency assets of that scale for an event that happens once.

We had 50,000 firefighters, 4,000 fire trucks, 1500 fire stations. It wasn't enough. We could double that and they would sit there for 20 years and not be used.

Water mains run dry because every outlet is being sucked dry by Pumpers in a catastrophic situation. This is not something to blame governments for. You cannot build the infrastructure to accommodate these once in lifetime events.

No amount of fire trucks and personnel stops fires like this. These fires ran for 20 kilometres before wiping out whole towns and people in the street. Beforehand they were green and you would not believe a fire could start.

Don't blame the Governors and the Parties just because you vote the opposite. It would happen ANYWAY.

You cannot burn your way to land clearing. You cannot burn or clear enough in the right area to negate catastrophic conditions.

You would have to burn two thirds of your country with fires 10,000 times the size all year round.

So I stand corrected. There has been someone (maybe more than one, hard to tell right now) apprehended who they believe started a fire. Not saying all of the fires were started that way. Obviously we still have to wait for the investigations. I have some friends and family in the area who also believe some of the fires were set deliberately but they admitted they have no proof of it.

Either way jumping to conclusions and immediately assuming who's to blame only causes more problems than it does solving them.

From what I've read and it took all of 5 sec to do a search the man arrested is a homeless guy with a blow torch trying to start a fire and was taken down by citizens. There is NO evidence yet to suggest he started any of the fires even though the title of the article suggests. Only people who can determine this is the LA Arson squad.

Yeah was just reading that just a few minutes ago. It's one reason I was a bit apprehensive about stating whether or not he was being charged with anything and just said he was apprehended. Been hearing plenty of people say they THINK they're being set by people but there hasn't been any proof yet.

I expect that, as in past cases, while the original fire may not have been maliciously set, there are likely people taking advantage of the chaos to make it worse. I'm sure the rabid activism and resentment politics there aren't helping...
