Kia Motors America experiences massive IT outage across the US

Kia's Network Is Down, From Finance Sites to Owner Apps, and Nobody Will Say Why

Kia Motors America suffers ransomware attack, $20 million ransom

The service writer from the dealer just called and had to cancel my appointment for Friday due to this issue and said they will call me back to reschedule once they have their systems back online. This is the information I could find about it in the news.

ETA
Apparently this is also happening to State Farm? (They are on Day 3 of no service)

Luckily my last payment was made via auto-draft just prior to this happening. I'm hoping they can get it sorted out quickly.

I also wonder what kind of security or privacy implications this may have for my linked accounts.

KMF is working fine as of 11:49am GMT (6:49am EST in the United States).

the plot thickens... dun dun dun...

I honestly wonder if they did suffer an attack and are just in full on damage control mode. Seems likely but again, waiting on things to come to light.

I wonder if any of our personal information is now in jeopardy? I am financing through Kia! </3
with all the breaches over the last 5yrs, all our information has been compromised a couple times over by now

I know right? I must have a ton of cars out there in my name. They keep calling about the extended warranties. :D

You'd also think that after all these breaches, companies would take this whole 'security' thing a bit more seriously. There seems to be more, not less, of it happening. Like... the fact it's happening is the head's up to get your ducks in a row, that these very large companies are ignoring?

I do SMB managed service support and understand how complexity complicates things as companies grow, but they also have more resources and control over things smaller businesses have to rely on in the 'shared services' bucket. Smaller businesses should be the ones getting their ass handed to them as a result of the compromises they have to make financially/practically, but not necessarily huge corporations. The fact this is happening is entirely poor planning, poorer implementation, and complacency. I have zero sympathy for a huge company getting hacked. They've needed to do a lot wrong for 3+ days of downtime to occur. Trying not to be pessimistic, but the fact they've been down this long is a bad omen for whether they'll actually come back up without significant data loss or loss of services. Every day that goes by is a measure of just how deep the damage and/or extent of intrusion.

plot twist: they're all selling or giving away our information...

Just got a call from the dealer. Their systems are back online now. I still want to know what actually happened though...

I decided to call for update today. Talked to Kia motor financing who directed me to consumer affairs. They told me a server was attacked and no information was lost. Apparently the situation was rectified and no monies were paid. I asked the representative what she thought was the possibility any personal information was hacked. She said I can be absolutely confident this did not happen. Makes me feel a little better.
Time will tell.

That is reassuring at least! I don't want my information stolen... too many garbage scammers and thieves already have it lmfao!!
