Every day I travel the 2 miles to work, and it seems every night I get a tailgater wanting to read the serial number on my rear bumper........I'm traveling at a good clip mind you ten over the posted limit (25 mph.). Is it Amazing that the stingers rear end attracts would be street racers?. Or are we living among impatient ,entitled, no respect for others **** them me first attitude people. I drive for a living and it really doesn't bother me in the least when I'm tailgated in my semi....I hit the brakes and the offending tailgater gets the damage and believe me , I won't see it or feel it.....but in my stinger? Thats a different story, I need a sedative I get so angry.... I gave a brake job to one female driver so far and I had second thoughts after I done so, sure it backed them off........but our bumpers for the most part are trashed by a mosquito hit ...........Every gosh darn day, It's Amazing.........please share other tailgater stories and please keep back from the driver in front of you...after all the stinger has a nice face to with that ass.

My strategy is to just start slowing down. Sooner or later they'll get annoyed and go around. If it's a one lane/direction road, go exactly at the speed limit.

I don't know what they teach in driver's ed these days but following distances seems to be skimmed over. Two + decades on the vehicle type in my avatar has taught to always know escape routes ahead of time. In heavy traffic i'll keep a 10-20 car length distance (used to MT's) so as not to be shifting gears all the time.

Brake checking someone is dangerous and can come back to bite you. Not worth it.

I get this in residential streets and city parks with double-yellow lines. What I've started doing is just waving them around me. Stick my hand out the window and motion for them to go around. If they hit another car, it's on them. It's fun to watch them try to control their vehicle swerving back into the lane to avoid traffic.

I dont hit the brakes, but just take my foot off the gas pedal. Thinking about getting cameras for the front and rear. Crazies are out of control.

and we are outnumbered.....

This..

Depending on traffic conditions and how close they are staying to my bumper, I'll either:

  • Ease off the gas till I'm at the limit, then 5 under, then 10 under..
  • Drop a couple gears manually to drive the point home faster
  • Depress the brake just enough to get the brake lights to turn on and see if they flinch
  • Send some washer fluid over the roof
  • All else fails stab the brakes and see what the brembo's can do

I'm usually 5-10+ over at all times so I'm not trying to play traffic cop, and I'll always move over to the right when possible. But when I have nowhere to go and plenty of traffic is in front of me, and I can't see any of the driver or their windshield in my rearview mirror... Relax people.

Totally agree. I never brake check. I just maintain my speed which is always a bit over the speed limit. If they persist, I slow down to 5 under the speed limit. That pisses them off more than anything. Have to be careful around here (Chicago). Break checking is a good way to get sprayed with lead…especially on the Eisenhower expressway. 160 highway shootings in Chiraq this year…SO FAR. Can’t WAIT to move.

That is what a democracy brings you...
no It is what a lazy ,uneducated and has a hand out mentality society gets you........democracy will have a hand for the better or worse at this point...imho.

The problem; lack of time management, lack of focusing on the road, lack of respect for other drivers. My solution, let off the gas and go as slow as I reasonably can. They'll go around.

If I'm on the highway, going at a good clip and I still get the tailgater....well, if I have room and relative safety ahead I'll create a nice little space gap. ;)

We can go off on such a tangent discussing chicago. It deserves its own thread, subforum :) Suffice to say I try to stay in the suburbs. Her Magesty Queen Lightfoot has more pressing matters than gun violence, car jackings and other delinquency/hooliganism.

I've been driving for more years than I care to express here, but one thing I found out, it doesn't matter how fast you drive, there will always be a red light a stop sign or a law abiding citizen to slow you down, so whats the point?..There is only one....I hate people.....probably would restore my faith in humanity out west....but only far enough to escape the meth heads and ignorance..........Good luck with that, right? lol

Staying safely distanced back is Rule 2. in my six rools for defensive/safe driving: I repost it here (I do this one or more times a year :D):

1. Always devote as much conscious attention to your driving as required. I would say at least half of your brain power at all times. Reduce/eliminate multitasking.

2. Never follow too closely. Be generous in the allowance of space between your car and the vehicle you are following.

3. Reduce speed to existing conditions. This means never use cruise control in slick or icy or restricted visibility conditions.

4. Check your mirrors often. The idiots behind you will pose your greatest risk that you have zero control over. (Leave enough space in front of you to – possibly - get out.)

5. Never perform sudden, unsignaled maneuvers. Always be where other drivers expect you to be.

6. Check for side traffic, and double check, before pulling out into traffic or changing lanes.

That IS a result of "unnatural " cancer system, such as democracy. Survival of unfittest.

I can't claim to never brake-check, because I remember doing it (it's been a while, though) and I have not sworn off it. But, in this car I follow it up with a surge of acceleration: if I can't do that, I won't brake-check.

When someone is glued to my bumper I make doubly sure that I have plenty of extra room in front of me, in case I need to slow down: I don't want the maroons in my rear having to suddenly find the brake pedal, I want to give them plenty of time.

My preferred scenario is, the road ahead is clear enough for extra legal speeds: I hit it and leave them back there to glue themselves to the bumpers of the people I pass and put between myself and the tailgating maroons.

But we are getting off topic.....time to step on the gas!!

Back when I had an exploder sport… I was driving a back road (with many neighborhoods attached) (posted speed limit was 25).. probably doing 40.

a postal truck came barreling from way back onto my bumper like white on rice. He had to have been going like 65 to catch me as fast as he did.

he kept on my rear for a mile.

I did a quick brake check (but the exploder tended to lock up and bite harder than I wanted)… like to a complete stop.

he was pissed. Pulled up next to me cussing and swearing. “What’s your fn problem” yada yada yada.

motioned his waist like he was packing.

I let him pass… then I followed him for a few miles. Just to piss him off.

probably not the wisest thing. But immensely satisfying.
