I recently purchased my KIA Stinger GTline "blue edition" - it's 3 years old (I'm in the UK). A couple weeks after I got it home I noticed the plastic inside the tail gate was peeling off especially around the open/close button and the latch mechanism - see attached picture. I've used a nylon brush to try to remove the worst but it still doesn't look good.

Anyone else seen any of the black internal plastic peeling or chipped, especially round the inside of the tail gate?

It's like there's a laminate surface on the top of the plastic that's now peeling away.

That is odd and the first time Ive seen it and Im a long standing member here. My best guess is someone lubricated the latch assembly with a lubricant thats corrosive to plastic.

OK, thanks - I'd not thought of that, but that's a possibility. I might mention it to my local dealer on the next service to see if anything can be done under warranty. It looks like the plastic part on the back of the tail gate can be replaced - but I bet its not cheap!
Apart from that I'm loving the Stinger
:-)

that stinks. previous owner did something stupid, nothing else could account for it. likewise I have never seen or heard of any interior plastic 'sloughing' like that. try 'plastx' by Meguiar's if you can get it over there, or an equivalent type of treatment. it should keep it from getting worse or being as noticeable.

I've just googled the Meguiar's plastic polish you mentioned and I can get it from Amazon, so I might gently apply a wire brush to the plastic and then the Meguiar's plastic polish.
Thanks for the recommendation.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
You can definitely see the white residue around the plastic where its delaminating and also specs on the plastic latch cover....Im not sure what was used as a cleaner or lubricant but it was not wise.....it almost looks like salt residue.

Yep, it seems the general consensus here is the previous owner applied something that's affected the plastic.
I'll give it a thorough clean and research to see what will protect this type of plastic long term, as I'm pretty sure the KIA dealer will say the same as you guys and refuse to repair under warranty.
Its not the end of the world as no one really sees this part of the car, just bugs me knowing its there - and I don't want it to get worse over time.
Thanks.
