Okay, maybe I've gone crazy. Has anyone found a trunk release in the car? (Not the emergency release)

Yours is powered, right? You should find it to the left of the steering wheel.

It isn't powered. I have a GT1. Don't tell me it has to have a power lift for it to be opened from inside...

There is an emergency release but not a manual button to open it from inside unless you have a power liftgate. With it being a hatch it would just latch closed again if there was a manual release.

There is, of course, a trunk release button on the smart key.

Now that you say it that makes perfect sense.

Right, but it's a lot easier to hit a button on the dash than to dig in my pockets to hit one on the fob.

Of course it's nothing I can't live without.

Your car has a smart key so you don't have to press any buttons on your key fob as long as you have your key with you. Just walk up to the trunk and use the little handle. Your car will sense the key and it'll unlock itself.

The button on your key fob actually just unlocks the hatch, it won't pop it open or anything along those lines unless you have the power hatch.

If your car is unlocked, you manually open it at the hatch. If your car is locked and you do not have your key on you it will not open. If the car is locked and you do have your key on you I believe you have to push the hatch release on the key and it might just unlock the hatch, but my guess is no, you just unlock the entire car to open the hatch. Would need someone with a GT or GT1 to confirm this. I would think that the hatch release on the keyfob is only for GT2 owners and it will auto release and open the hatch. My Sorento has a boot release which does nothing. If you push it when the car is locked it does nothing you have to unlock the vehicle to open the boot. I think they make one fob across all platforms of a vehicle and if a button is not usable its just there anyway.

Only on the GT2. I did not see one on the GT Limited that I was sitting in.

On another note mldavis2, we must be connected somehow. Below is my list of cars owned

93 Pontiac TransAm 5.7L 6m
00 Buick Regal GS (supercharged 3.8L)
05 Pontiac GTO 6.0L LS2 6m (450 WHP 455 TQ)
08 Saturn Aura 3.6L (modded to 385 WHP) was going to buy a 08 G8, but no GXP (6m with LS3) were available, so I saved money and bought the Saturn.
11 Kia Optima SX
15 Subaru STi

You never know. :D
I am going to cry when my Stinger gets here in a couple of weeks (got the VIN earlier this week :)) and I have to turn in my faithful G8 GT which has been an absolutely perfect car. Someone will get a real gem and I'll lose one. :( )

I have 2.0t premium no powered trunk. The problem it does not unlock even from keyfob! Flashes two times and nothing. Is there a setting for that somewhere? It is looks stupid not to have unlock key in cabin and will be even bad if it does not work from keys

It will not work! ONLY on GT2 trim with the power liftgate. We know it totally sucks.

Hatch is too heave even to be unlocked. I understand. But this is not an excuse for KIA :)

This is a total bummer, why is it even on the key if it doesn’t work......

Ehhh these are the little things that people will bash KIA for :(

Make sure the car is unlocked. The trunk lock is synchronized with the door locks. So if someone hops out to get something out of the trunk, unlock the doors, then they can push the button on the liftgate and open it.

During entry inspection going into Mexico, they demanded I open my hatch. The button to the left of the steering wheel didn't do anything. The key fob button didn't do anything. The cops got louder and more insistent. Apparently driver in seat, door closed, seat belt fastened, trans in 'D', the computer thinks opening the hatch is a bad idea?

I undid my belt and tried to get out of car to go open it for them. The cops got a LOT louder and MORE insistent that I stay in the car and open the hatch! Nothing I could do except sit there wondering how long before they start shooting. Finally the cop at the rear of the car found the unlock / open button and got it open. 10 second look and she shut the hatch and waved me onward. I'm guessing when I put it in park and undid my seat belt, then the button on the hatch would allow her to open it?
