Hi All,

Looking at buying a new (2019) Stinger GT2 and I've been pricing the car around the South TX area. The car with the best deal right has about 400 miles on it. This worries me because I know that people like to drive this car hard when testing it. I've read in other places that you shouldn't expect much more than 30 miles or so on a vehicle.

I asked the sales person about it, and he says that the GM has been driving this car around as his "company" car.

This GT2 is priced at 46,900. The next best deal I've gotten is 49,730 (with 50 miles on it). So almost a $3K difference.

My question is should I be worried about the milage?

I bought a 2018 stinger with 500 kms on it which was sitting as a showroom model. I wouldn't worry too much about it if its just 300-400 miles. I would certainly be worried if it has more than 1000 miles.

I thikn the price is still a bit too high. Tell him 45k and they got a deal. Just an fyi those 400 miles will be HARD miles. You know he was driving it like he stole it.

I say no thanks.

Years ago I worked as a temp employee during winter break at a large US east coast shipping port. My job was to drive brand new, imported cars from lot to lot as they were being inventoried, prepped and sorted for delivery to dealerships. Many of these workers were not particularly upstanding individuals to say the least. And, I was just a 19 or 20 year old college kid. Let me just say that a car with only 2 miles on it may not be as new as some people think. In some cases, it'd be surprising if the new car smell even remained intact, lol.

The GT2 I test drove had 4XX miles. I stepped on the accelerator a few times like I'm sure others did before me. I wound up "leasing" the same car. It's my daily driver and it's going be driven 12K miles or so a year for at least 10 years and I'm not at all worried about how it may have been driven those first few miles.

That said, only you can make the determination of whether it is something you are comfortable with (it looks like the savings are substantial). It would be impossible to determine whether some early abuse/not adhering to break in procedures has any effect on longevity/reliability of the vehicle. You do however, get a bit of an "extended" warranty with the slightly driven but still new car since you get the full mileage of the warranty added to whatever is on the odometer.

On the other hand, there are some people who will basically want to see their car rolling off the ship. These same people probably would not consider buying the same car they test drove hard, even if they were the first to drive it after being parked in a dealer lot.

This is why you do a European Delivery on exotics....another example of why we can't have nice things.

Back in those days, the German luxury brands were shuttled around by the longshoreman. The serial car abusers were not allowed to drive them and for good reason. But Toyotas, Mitsubishis, Suzukis, etc., they were fair game. Typically, the younger guys would jockey for position to get a Starion or MR2 instead of a Corolla. Occasionally, you'd get a Samurai and get to experience a little more body roll. Saw some of the dumbest things when out of view of any supervisors (who didn't much care anyway). I drew the line at rabbit starts and maybe a little wheel spin. But I also witnessed bump drafting and non-official NHTSA 2.5mph bumper tests.

Hopefully your stinger has not been abused by any college kid.;) again appreciated ur comment.

Thanks to all for the input.

Just as I was about to creep closer to actually driving to the dealer to take a close look at the vehicle, the sales person revealed that the car actually had about 2200 miles on it! I don't think they were trying to hide it from me - they volunteered the information. But ya - thats' a bit much for just a $3K difference.

The good new is that I was able to bargain against that deal with another dealership and got them to come down $2100 (and add a couple of small options).

Nice man! You going to pull the trigger?

Yep they're prepping a 2019 GT2/RWD/Ceramic/Red interior. They threw in window-tint, so we'll do the deal after that's done.

BTW... Got $10K from CarMax for my 2009 Acura TL SH-AWD. It was cherry - only 56K on it.

Just make sure they don't increase the total cost of the car by $1,800 for that awesome window tint! :D
