Greetings Stingerites,
Odd thing happened to my ‘18 Stinger GT, Soo Lee, last Friday afternoon. I hit the expressway going home from work and I put her in Sport Mode for an extra boost while situating to my lane and I’m crusing fine. I was about to go into my custom mode (with Engine in Eco), but was gliding pleasurably for a bit at 90mph with a white AMG not far behind me. All a sudden my car started to decelerate and lose power, I noticed my Auto Hold indicator was Green. I tried to turn it off, but it wouldn’t turn off. All of a sudden my car’s female voice told me that there is a potential Engine Control System Error, and it asked me if I wanted to schedule an appointment. All of this with the AMG rapidly coming up behind me- I’m lucky its driver was paying attention, or it would have slammed into my rear...could have caused a domino effect accident. I immediately turned on my hazards and pulled over to the side.
I restarted the car and the dreaded auto-hold light was off. Power was restored, but I had a check engine light and another Engine Control System Warning. I was unable to access Sport Mode- or any mode. It sucked. But I was grateful that I had basic power and could get home. Once home, I headed back out to Autozone and asked to borrow thier OBDC Tester. I wanted the code(s) for the CEL. It was then that I connected the tester to the OBDC port and turned on the car. The device displayed “reading,” but gave no result. I looked at the instrument cluster and was amazed to find that the CEL was gone! This was not a case of the OBDC tool having cleared the error either. The computer clearly corrected for the fault.
That leads me to believe that there is a possibility that I accidentally hit that damned Auto-Hold button when I was reaching my knob for Sport Mode. If that’s the case, the moment I would have hit the brake for any reason, I would have started to electronically decelerate...yet I was aggressively giving the car gas in this instance, maybe this “forced manual acceleration” somehow caused the error to the engine, in conflict with it trying to electronically decelerate?
Either that, or there is a problem with Auto-Hold autonomously activating as part of the Engine Control System error that causes the car’s driving modes to become inaccessible. I did read about someone on here, or another forum, who said that they had a similar experience, and it was happening only while they drove extensively in Sport Mode- the mode I was in before my failure occurred.
Thank you if you read this far. If anyone has heard if this happening, or a similar fault, please enlighten me. I need info on this. I will also update the thread with anything that is learned if this happens again, thus, I will then take it in to a Kia Specialist. But, for now the car is back to normal and its at full power again.
Lastly, I wanted to mention, that while the Engine Control System CEL was on, I was unable to go into the settings of any car mode and select the engine setting. Doing so would cause another Engine Control System Warning.
