"E" Emblems/Badges, explain please

Never saw the "E" emblem before and don't know how it relates to Kia.
Can someone explain please.

Also, which emblem (E or broken K) do you prefer and why?

I prefer the K, and from what I recall the E represents "engineered for excellence"
