Does anyone know how the dark chrome trim strips on either side of the hatch door are attached to the car?

If I understand the pieces you refer to, it is called the pillar garnish. So says the service manual.
Held on by five clips.
The manual says to remove with a plastic trim panel removal tool. Carefully to avoid marring the surface.

Thanks for that. Have you any more details? What direction should they be pulled from?

Would you have any more details about the removal procedure you could share? Thanks!

I have removed hood vents, side vents and mirror covers. Get the plastic tools and pry carefully but firmly. Study the back of the replacement part and pry accordingly. What are you replacing the with?

I'm replacing them with the same again - they have watermarks on them and one has an patch at the bottom where the dark chrome has come off.

If I bought mine out of state, used (13k miles) 4 weeks ago, with an extended full bumper-to-bumper 100k mile warrenty, do you think the chrome coming off is covered at a local KIA dealer? I've got the same issue.

late response but chrome indeed are covered by warranty, mine are fading too, this car has the worse paint ever seen.
