I think Kia has done an amazing job with the Stinger, it's a great car worth the asking price.
Problem is, most of their dealerships are like walking into a corner used car lot.
I don't think a lot of the kia dealerships are ready to deal with the type of customer that is willing to spend over $50,000 on a car. It's a night and day difference in experience shopping for a kia vs any luxury brand. I truly think this is going to hurt sales - lot of people just won't walk into a kia dealership

Although it is tucked away in several locations (threads), this topic has come up on numerous occasions here on the forum. I agree with you completely and still have not made a purchase due in part to this issue. The "nice" dealers don't have the car I want or are 800 miles away. There is no one to blame, for it to be a Kia car, it has to be sold by Kia dealers. All dealers are not created equal. I think people will go into a dealership, because the car is that good, they just won't leave with a car if the sales experience isn't up to par. At this point, I am considering a supercharged Lexus GS350 as a viable alternative to the continued waiting for the right dealer/car opportunity. Still haven't heard from the dealer I made a workable offer to over 2 weeks ago.
 
For me, the car transcends the dealership as long as the service department is trained and honest. I shopped three dealers. The nicest dealership was fairly new facility and $2,500 higher priced. One dealership was large and undergoing a buy-out and refused to order a car, gave me a rude hassle on trade-in allowance and wanted to only sell what they had on the lot. Last dealership was at an old facility in need of updating but no pressure and totally helpful. They are waiting on city codes to begin rebuilding a new facility, but it was the personnel that earned my business and the price. I don't need some fancy dealership to offer me bonbons in the waiting room, shine my shoes and iron my shoelaces. I only want a fair price, respect and honest professional service on my car.

With the internet and sites like stingerforum.org, as a generalization, buyers are much more educated these days, having done extensive research online before making a major buying decision. This is different than a generation ago. This is especially true with large purchases by "up-scale" or "educated" buyers. The days of dealerships selling monthly payments instead of cars is waning. Sure people buying a $10,000 used car may only be focused on the monthly payment, but a prospective Stinger buyer is likely to be an experience new car buyer, being well read on the car before even walking into a dealership. Couple that with the fact that shopping online for a new car is the the new norm, the old model of a dealership where you develop a relationship with a salesperson who you go back to again and again every time you buy a new car, or a developing a relationship with the service department of the dealership where you purchased the car are going the way of buggy whips.

The new reality is that people will educate themselves online as to what's out there, both in choice of vehicles, available inventory and best pricing well before they step inside a dealership.

This is the way I bought my car, and I think I am far from unique:

1. Shop online and see what the market has to offer. Decide on a car that is the focus of the purchase.

2. Visit a local dealership, take a test drive, and try to see what deal can be found there.

3. Then price shop online, and see what the best deal is out there. Bring that deal to the local dealership and try to get them to match it.

4. Buy the best deal you can get, whether it be local or distant.

5. Bring the vehicle to whatever dealership you want for servicing; usually the local one. With regard to servicing, modern cars (Korean) need very little servicing. Oil changes and tires can be done anywhere. Rarely there is warranty work, and nothing major needs to be done before 100,000 miles.

Dealerships know this and the survivors have adjusted already.

But to be fair, where else would you get your shoelaces ironed?

The stinger isn't the only car that is 50+, their minivan/SUV isn't cheap either, neither is the cadenza. It's the fact that it is a sport sedan that might be ruining it. Look at the soul. The thing sells itself. Minivan buyers will cross shop different brands. Personally, the stinger and the cadenza are the game changers. Those two vehicles are what kia dealers can't figure out. I think they have figured that people who wants those cars, only want those cars, and can do what they want when people are shopping them.

Add to that the fact that many people (I'm one) don't like other people driving their new car like a maniac before it's broken in properly. That's why I ordered mine and didn't buy one off the lot. Perhaps a large dealership would pick one as a demo and leave the others on the lot. I can understand their point as well, but that's not a good thing to say to a potential buyer (which I assume you are.) Your current ride may also have been a problem for them to consider you as a potential customer.

What would my current ride have to do with anything?
I've walked into Porsche and been handed the keys to a 911 to test drive on my own but can't test drive a Kia?
I understand the kids coming in and just wanting to drive it, but I am 50 ....

I've said it in the other threads on this topic...find a newer Kia dealer. Mine that I ultimately made the purchase through was a year old. Nice facility with nice salespeople...they've already followed-up over the phone three times now, just to check in. Don't be discouraged by crappy dealers, just try a different one. Sucks to have to say that but that mentality applies to many things besides car buying!

Wow been to 2 dealers ... once with my friend to show him ... and once for myself ... neither had an issue with us test driving a short 5-6 miles ... even a black and red GT2
 
The dealership I went to let me drive it for 2 hours and even offered to let me take it over night. If they know you are serious, they will usually accommodate you. I don't blame them for not wanting a bunch of miles on brand new cars but no test drive is a non-starter for me. Find a better dealership.
 
The first dealership i went to said they wouldn’t let me test drive without a credit check and a deposit on the car. I showed up in my Audi A5 s-line drop top. I walked out of that dealership and went and found one that would take me seriously. Granted the one i ultimately bought my car from also was not a joy to work with due to a really really horrible financing manager...the GM and dealership owner made it all right in the end. After of course blasting them on social media, internet reviews, and the BBB. I agree with everyone...Kia dealerships are not ready to deal with Stinger buyers. Its amazing the different level of salesmanship and customer service at Kia compared to my experiences at Audi. Honestly they need to take a chapter out of those kind of dealerships playbooks and get better!! I dont expect to be wined and dined but i sure as heck expect some level of respect and hospitality if im buying a 50K+ car from you!!

I see your point but I also can say when I bought my 3 series, the first BMW dealership I went to was less than hospitable. It all just depends where you go.

Before i got my first car first BMW dealership I went to was horrible ... been to 2 dealers they were ok for KIA ... the Infiniti dealers I went to were better though ... Kia on par with the honda dealers ive been at for my other car

Absolutely correct. I walked into a Kia dealership in CT on Saturday and the sales jumped on me like white on race. 'You ready to buy today? Price is $49.000... ' etc etc. He absolutely knew nothing about the car and was quoting me bullshit. I sked him about the 2.0 in silver on the lot and told him I wanted to see it. He said, 'it's all the way in the back of the lot [a long walk]. I told him to bring it up. He looked pissed. 15 minutes later I see him WALKING back, no car. 'It's blocked,' he tells me. I won't go on, but who would ever want to deal with such a schlock operation?????
