Car won't start

So when I press the "start engine" button only my stereo and dash lights come on (actually all the dash lights are lit up) its weird the engine doesn't even try and turn on.

Probably a stupid question on my part but, you do have your foot on the brake when pushing the Start/Stop button right?

Well glad it worked... but isn’t there a graphic in the dash showing a foot pressing down on the pedal to start?

Okay, in his defense, I had an old lady in the parking lot at home actually ask me help her start her car. She said it wouldn't start when she pressed the button, but that she just got the car "yesterday". I asked her if she was pressing the brake down, and she looked at me confused, and then thanked me and said she'll try that. As I walked back to my apartment, I heard her car start up
