I had to learn the hard way ... but if you buy second-hand wheel(s), ask for their factory wheel nuts also.

See pic below. The one on the left is the type that my 2017 Stinger GT came with. The one on the right is the new version, which has a captive washer and the dome-section at the base is quite different. Even though the wheels look identical (i.e. the original GT version worldwide), the holes for the threads in the wheels are slightly different. Someone on this forum may be able to advise exactly when this change occurred, but I think it is with Stingers being sold from early 2020.

I won't go into huge detail here, but let's just say over a period of ~6 months, the 'old' wheel nuts on a 'new' wheel actually worked their way loose, and if I hadn't diagnosed the problem (clunking sound from the rear while driving gently and decelerating), I might have had a wheel coming right off. True story.

Bit short-sighted of KIA to do this. They should have associated a distinct change in wheel design to coincide with a significant wheel nut design change.

KIA P/N for the new version is 52950 37000

Wow that's an odd thing to do but looks like they changed the wheel seat. Nut on the left is a conical seat and the right is a mag seat. Using the incorrect nut can for sure cause them to loosen off.

Happens a lot here when people use their OE wheel nuts on their winter steel wheels or on other aftermarket wheels. OE wheels often use a Mag seat design whereas most aftermarket wheels are a conical seat.

Yes, this came up months ago. Good to have a refresher on this news. I have two sets of lugs; "my" wheel guys knew better than to use the OE lugs on a TSW wheel. Hah.

Must admit when I was trying to get to the bottom of it, I did a bunch of searches on this forum to find answers ... my searches didn't pick up anything. But there's a lot of chat out there, hard to find things I guess.

The other semi-relevant info on this is ... it was after several full-gas launches with LC on (maybe 5 or 6) to ~100kmh, then hard braking some of the time, that the problem showed itself. This was out in the country after 6 months of metro driving (COVID restrictions etc)

Is that mean the newer version nut can be used on both older and newer type of wheel. I have a 2019 GT1 with the older type of nut. I bought a set of new 2021 OEM wheels with set of newer nut.

It sounds to me like @BlackGhost got away with using the wrong lugs for a few months.

You'd need an expert to answer that 100%, but I would say ... use the wheel nuts with the wheel they were designed for - only.

Yeah I wasted $40 on a set of conical seat lug nuts (I just wanted black lug nuts). Only found out when I went to change them out. My fault, I should have looked first. I had never seen mag seat lug nuts before this car.

So I have a 2019 and had the rims powder coated. Which black lug nuts would be ideal?

Why are you worried about a detail like that, when you let your car get that filthy? :P But, I'd just paint them gloss black, on the car; easy peasy, with a wide, flat brush. The first time you get your wheels taken off and put back on, the black lug nuts start to show metal anyway: I touch up mine, usually just on the outer facing (top) half, since that's pretty much all that really shows.
