Hey everyone, a how-to autoflex paint fail. (hope this is where I would post this query). I recently recieved my two spoilers from spoiler king and today, I went to paint both using black auto flex paint/contains latex. After painting and letting dry between coats, the spoilers are now tacky to the touch, it stinks. :(
Does anyone know if using a dab of car wax on the tacky surface will smooth it up? Trying not to remove the paint. Thank you.20190826_191812.webp 20190826_192314.webp

my advise it put them ina dark dry place and leave them for about a month ......................the paint needs to harden ..............NEVER wax fresh paint , it needs to release all the gases to properly harden .....................all will be well ......

Wow, never thought I've had to wait that long. Any other time I've used this type of paint, everything was hunkydory. This spoiler seems like a PITA to paint :poop::(

Did you give the spoiler a coat of primer first? It may be that the spoiler is porous, and so is "sucking in" some of the paint and leaving a rough surface.

Did you sand the surface before painting, and did you wet-sand between coats as well?

Only did what the vendor recommended-- sand with 600 grit to remove any debris, wipe down any fine dust and particles left over, then paint 1-2 coats leaving about 10-15 minutes per each coat.

Ah, I missed that this paint contains latex. Have you used this specific product before?

I can't imagine that any paint containing rubber will be perfectly smooth. And the smell would be the latex - as @westcoastGT mentioned, it may need time to "go off".

Is this similar to Plasti-Dip?

If so, there are a couple of things you should have done to get a more smooth finish.

First, fill your sink up with hot water and sit the paint can in it. Keep the water level low enough that the can won't float. Warming up the paint helps it to spray more fine.

Second, the finishing coats need to go on heavy. If you spray all coats light like you would normal spray paint it will leave it feeling like 60 grit sand paper once you're done. Praying wet (heavy) coats makes the finish more smooth.

Hopefully this stuff is similar to Plasti-Dip so you'll be able to just peel it off and try again. If it isn't, just disregard everything I typed. :lipsaresealed:

This is the spray paint that has been used. The finish as of today is smoother, but, still a bit tacky to the touch. Like if I put my thumb print on it and apply pressure, you can see a bit of the thumb print. Current condition is 70 degrees in the garage with a slight breeze as the door is opened. Thank you all for your inputs so far!

I misunderstood what you meant by "tacky".

Bring the spoilers into the house and lower the AC's temp. The lower humidity will help the paint cure faster. The air in your garage is probably pretty damp.

You may have applied the paint too thick.

Cool, makes sense so I'll see how that turns out!
