I started watching the docuseries Formula 1 Drive to Survive on Netflix and it is fantastic!!! Great insight into the world of Formula 1 racing and all the drama that goes on behind the scenes. Not to mention some awesome race footage from a first person pov. Super intense! Highly recommended!!

I browsed past that the other day... I'll be sure to check it out now. Thanks.

You'll like it I think!! I'm not even a huge fan of Formula 1 and I'm completely addicted to it. All I hear from the wife at 1am is "TURN THAT DOWN!!!" as the cars are flying around the track a 200mph. I think I should invest in some good headphones

Just use the Harmon Kardon BT headphones that came with the car. ;)

I actually started this the other day as well. I was hooked almost instantly. It's crazy the amount of precision that's involved in every aspect of F1, very entertaining show.

Formula One skidded off the rails decades ago; when they didn't put the stops on high downforce development. I can see a place (barely) for high downforce in GT type cars: a full body allows for "tasteful" design of wings and air dams, etc. But OPEN WHEEL?! The instant Graham Hill broke his wing supports during a race I was saying, "See? SEE? I TOLD YOU! Now, STOP THIS!" And I expected to see "wings" banned. No such thing. The rules makers said, "No wings unless they are directly attached to the body." So, all the wings came down and moved out until they were as wide as the rims, etc. Ridiculous looking abominations! A limit could have been imposed right then: no wings wider than the inside sidewall, i.e. no wings extending to the tread. And ground effects (which "they" later banned, then later modified) could have been "right out" from the getgo. And why not? Of what practical application are ground effects to a street car? Meanwhile, GT type cars were doing all that and more: all in the name of "go faster", which of course makes sense in racing, and tickles the adrenals of street jockeys everywhere. But Formula One was not done yet; more was to come along to screw it up. The "wings" multiplied in number and sizes, until now we have winglets and tabs and directors added and turned and angled to send the air/wind to strategic parts of the car to facilitate handling and gription in the subtlest of ways, etc. While this has developed, the cars have gotten ridiculously long and wider as well. This should never have happened: a maximum wheelbase and width should have been set in stone. Combined with the most conservative of allowances for "wings", the cars would still be good looking missiles on wheels: instead of these angular, frilled (almost feathered looking) contraptions we see and hear today. Oh, yes, the sound: now it has to artificially be added back in, because the cars naturally are too quiet to be interesting. (This rant is brought to you by a teenager in an old man's body, who never liked Formula One after 1967, much …)

Yeah, same. That was almost 20 years before I was born :D

Either way though, I remember watching some Indy Car as a kid (just a little) but not F1. But at that point it seems like most of the modernization of the engines and the aero had happened already. So I never knew any differently.

I thought Season One of Drive to Survive was excellent. I just finished Season Two and didn't find it nearly as entertaining. Not sure why. Maybe it's a simple as the first season bringing something new and original to the screen and come the second season, I was expecting what I was watching. Also, this season seemed more formatted - with access to Mercedes and Ferrari this year, the producers seemed to simply allocate one episode to each team without the more chronological blend of events from Season One.

Just finished benging both seasons yesterday. Looking forward to S3.

It's very nicely done and brings a lot of the background story that usually only dedicated fans know about. As a life-long follower, I personally enjoy that aspect of the sport as much as the racing. Unfortunately, I think people who aren't big racing fans would not get drawn in enough to want to watch every episode, although I'm sure many people who weren't all that familiar will now show more interest.

DON'T MENTION HEADPHONES!!!
There is a sub section of this forum who are intensely jealous they did not receive one of these - and this will just get them going - again.

This is the last season of F1 that has the big budget disparities between the rich teams and the ones barely scraping by. It's unfortunate that the series is a year behind and can't be more current, but perhaps this is because of the intense competition off of the race track for drivers. I haven't seen the Ford Vs Ferrari movie yet, but I've seen other documentaries about Carroll Shelby that are excellent. What an interesting man! WRC would still be my favorite form of racing, but they don't really show it in the US any more.
