I have an old habit when I park of shifting to neutral, getting the parking brake set so the car rests 100% on that, then shifting it to park. A couple of times now with the GT2, I forget to hit the P and I try to turn the car off. It’ll turn off in neutral with the brake set, but it yells at you to turn the accessory power back on and then shift to park.

Didn't I read that turning off in "N" automatically engages "P"? Or at least the Ebrake. I could be mistaken about that.

If you turn it off in D or R it will park the car.

as Diablo said if you are still in gear it'll shift to P automaticly and engage the parkingbrake by it self.

Me peronally, I have NEVER egaged the parkingbrake on an automatic car by myself. and I would never even think about doing it. Because if it's on P the car will / and should do all things necessary to prevent it from moving. Imo :)

Unless KIA is doing something different, the 'park' brake in an automatic transmission is a small metal pawl that engages as a relatively lightweight lock on the drivetrain.

I never leave the car parked on a hill, or even in on-street parking, and rely on just that without applying the emergency brake. If somebody rear ends you (especially on a hill) and snaps that pawl, away the car goes ... :(

Not sure if you're familiar with who Anton Yelchin was (Chekov from the newer Star Trek films), but he died because he did not engage his parking brake, the pawl either didn't engage or disengaged/snapped, and he was crushed by his vehicle.

Always use the parking brake to park your automatic transmission car. It takes stress off the parking pawl and adds another layer of security that the car will not move.

Like the OP, I engage the parking brake first in neutral for the exact same reason...and yes, I have gotten yelled at by Bitchin' Betty .

The GT2 (shift by wire) will put the transmission into Park when you shut down the engine. This not meant to hold the vehicle, it simply locks the transmission. The parking brake (it is NOT an "emergency brake") is required whenever you "park" the vehicle, on a level surface or on a hill. Please consult your manual if there is any confusion.

I'm in a lifelong habit of reaching for the parking brake every time I shut down. This one is a bit different, being only a little finger lift thingie (with a corresponding red "P" light on the dash); I much prefer an actual lever with a release button on the end; but it is what it is.

Parking brake, emergency brake - just different ways of referring to the same thing, and the terms have been used interchangeably for years.

It's a secondary mechanical braking system that is independent of the car's primary hydraulic braking system. It can immobilize the car when parked and, in the very rare occurrence of a complete primary brake system failure, assist in bringing a moving vehicle to a stop.

My parking brake does
I forget it from time to time.

Not on my GT2. The parking brake requires manual action.

There's a parking brake?

I use it if there's even a hint of incline. I should have it on all the time even on level ground. I probably would habitually do that if it were a traditional hand lever with button.

While my neighborhood is made up of steep hills, my driveway is flat. Parking at work is also perfectly flat. I'll use on a noticeable incline, but that's infrequent.

If you use auto-hold you can simply shut your car off from D - the car will then automatically apply the e-brake (parking brake) and shift the car to park when you hit the button to turn it off. There's zero reason to ever shift to N or even P with the GT2

why not engage the ebrake when you park... like you would on a manual ?

You mean as per the owners manual?

Because this is the internet, of course!

I always throw it into reverse, then remember to hit the P button, then pull the ebrake button. The funny thing is that auto-start/stop usually engages when I come to a full stop in my garage, then I hit the P button and the car starts back up again. Sometimes it even starts back up again when I unbuckle my seat belt. Then I need to turn the car off again. It's all very confusing. :)

no... as in a manual car. you would just leave you car in neutral without applying the Ebrake...

With my manual car (and any other cars that are manuals I've ever owned), I always put the e-brake on, and oftentimes put it in 1st gear.

Agree, first gear and ebrake, would never just leave it in neutral, someone could push it away or it could roll away on its own if there's a hill. Best to be in the practice of always doing both.
