Heading back to the dealership for my typical service visits. This time the car began making a knocking noise shortly after entering the highway. Shortly before it seemed to get stuck when switching gears, it was so odd I manually shifted the car to prevent it from reaching red-line.

Very odd situation, considering this car has ~26k miles it has shown an alarming amount of mechanical along with electrical failures. If it were not for the driving experience and looks of this car, I would rate this vehicle very poor.

Pretty much determined this is not a long term option (for my experience at least), I'll need to find a new car in a couple years. I was really hopeful to keep this thing going until I could jump into an alternative fuel car.

Knocking noise entering highway? Alarming amount of mechanical and electrical??
C’mon, you are talking about a stinger right? Please detail these mechanical and electrical issues you are experiencing and let us know what they discover with your knocking engine.
Is this in the US?
TT or 2.0?

Yes, I would definitely like to hear what issues you've experienced as most of us have had minor issues but nothing major. I don't even consider having my car repainted that major as it didn't affect driveability in the least, was more of an inconvenience than anything.

For what reason my previous replies did not stick. This is a US GT2 and just received word the engine must be replaced. Somewhat unfortunate series of events, they had to get in contact with a Kia Engineer to get approval. They found lower block damage, resulting in possible damage to the remaining part of the engine. They are expecting a 2 - 4 week turn around.

I'll be stuck driving a rental for some time...

Other issues include:

  • Rattling noise from the sunroof / hatch
  • Broken fitting for the seat belt (took 6 weeks to get the part)
  • Failed radio, which eventually lead to a missing SD card for the nav system
  • Dealership repaired a nail in the tire, failed to properly balance the tire (3 tries), lead to me replacing both rear tires and no longer using the service department
  • Front brakes with severe vibration, several trips, failed to resolve, replaced the brakes at another high performance shop on my dime

Most of these are relatively small, but simply the inability to service this vehicle on common issues and now I am knee deep into a major problem. We will see where this goes...

Did they say what caused the damage? That's really odd with today's engines.

From interior to exterior to high performance - everything you need for your Stinger awaits you...
No they did not and it probably will not be available until Kia Engineering performs a full review of the removed engine.

It is a 2018 with about 26k miles, no mods other than minor appearance changes.

Gotcha. Makes me wonder who on this forum has the highest mileage. Maybe I should start a new thread?

I saw a post earlier today from someone with 66k miles. He's also having mechanical problems. I'm sure he's a contender for highest mileage.

Does anyone know of any or how many Stingers required a replacement engine? If so, were they successful at keeping unforeseen issues from occurring?

Might be worth a look at the G80-G90 forums to see how the 3.3TTs are holding up in their cars. They have had that engine in their cars for the longest and should have the highest mileage.

Spoke to the Kia Stinger help line; according to them, this is the first issue of its kind. There are zero instances of a Kia Stinger 3.3 engine replacement other than ones effected by accidents. Such as the vehicle running over an object or some other sort of impact damage.

I'll simply need to wait this out...Hopefully they get things in and all is successful. They did mention Kia will cover / reimburse for any payments made while the vehicle is in service. He fully expects this take about 30+ days to fully iron out.

They found lower block damage
From the inside or the outside?

I've never heard of an engine replacement on a stock Stinger. Whole cars replaced, yes, but not an engine on a stock car.

From the inside...This is not related to any external damage and they are replacing it thru warranty.

They either lied or are uninformed. There have been at least two forum members who have had their engines replaced.

Saw this on the Facebook Group today

You are probably correct...Unfortunately I am not informed enough to judge his statement.
