Best-Ever April Sales for the Sportage CUV

IRVINE, Calif., May 1, 2018 – Kia Motors America today announced April sales of 50,585 vehicles, led by the Forte family of compact cars and Sorento SUV. The month also saw the highest April sales total in company history for the Sportage CUV at 7,653 units, and a 34.2-percent year-over-year increase for the Rio subcompacts.

“In addition to best-ever April sales for Sportage and big gains for Rio and Sportage, Stinger reached an important milestone by surpassing the 5,000 units sold mark,” said Bill Peffer, vice president, sales operations, Kia Motors America. “We continue to emphasize retail sales over fleet and with our ‘America’s Best Value’ summer sales event rolling out, the refreshed 2019 Sorento now in showrooms, and the all-new Forte model on the horizon, we will continue to generate momentum throughout the summer sales period.”

A couple hundred less Stingers sold compared to last month and only a few dozen more than February. Here's the chart.

So what do we think? Is this a good showing by the Stinger, bad news, or too early to tell? I'd assume Kia wouldn't want to see sales slowing so early in the life of the car.

Might be time to fix the lease deals.

I don't know the month by month comparison. I'm not sure how many Stingers wants to or expects to sell this year... I think there's zero chance of the Stinger not being a success.

For full production months in the U.S. Kia sold the following

January: 1021
February: 1344
March: 1555
April: 1378

Well, sales were going up steady until April. I guess we'll have to see what happens the next couple of months. Either way, the more the car is seen on the road, the more people are going to buy it. I think there's an underlying reason why sales dropped in April. The car is just too good to have problems selling.

I haven't seen another Stinger on the road, OR a Regal GS either.

Ive seen only one other in AZ so far and one in Orlando last week while on a business trip. Always nice to catch a glimpse.

I'm in socal, and I've literally only seen 2 on the road, and I'm on the highway between LAX and Irvine 5 days a week. Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I actually like not seeing a lot of stingers. Once you get to that point where everyone has one, say like BMW or MB, the uniqueness wears off. Plus, I'm thinking Kia may not be trying to sell 100k of these cars. It's the "halo" car so the strategy is to put out an excellent vehicle whose purpose is to actually raise the brand as a whole in terms of reputation not necessarily to be the world beater. But who knows...

None in my area .

I was thinking there may have been declining sales from the industry as a whole.

As far as competition I think the Regal GS went on sale in April. That could have caused lower Stinger sales.
Stock market also was down in April, so people may have gotten jitters about a large purchase.

Can’t find a dealer in Florida with a Regal GS to see. It is not from huge demand, but a lack of production and poor marketing and supply for a revamped rollout. Stinger is eating Buick’s lunch because of it.

Same I've only seen 2 other Stingers around LA, one was by the In N Out by LAX and he had the Stinger badge on the back.
